Notes on the Aether (Rae judging)

OOC: As far as I can see, we're all still here, except for Trouvere, who's away for 10 days. We're waiting on Rae, I assume, since we've all indicated our moves.

[tongue in cheek]Rae, don't worry about Keldar - we can NPC him in Trouvere's absence.[/tongue in cheek]

OOC: Wik has been nearly gone all week (I'm in 2 of his games), and Rae has been busy (The other game he's running I'm in has slowed this week)

Yep, waiting for me. But no longer!

Tarag has 5 HP left, yes.

Covaithe, highlight the brackets for detect magic results.

The massive oak door swings easily on its [
magically
] reinforced hinges. A large red rug is on the floor of the room behind the door, which turns out to be Thyrin's bedroom. Straight ahead are two large bookshelves, filled with texts [
and several magical auras
]. Off to the left is a large bed, with silk sheets and two pillows [
beneath which something emits an aura
]. Across from the bed is a desk with parchment paper, ink, and quills. Thyrin was writing a letter to someone, and he also has several blank books which he is currently filling with abstracts on his magical research. One book stands out on his desk as it is actually finished. It is titled A Treatise on the Thyrin-Rilithorne Warp Node of Material-Elemental Planar Intersections. Also on the desk is an unmarked book which Tommy recognizes as Thyrin's spellbook. Underneath the stairs is a closet containing an assortment of robes, traveling clothes, hats, shoes. None are particularly fashionable.

Back on the other side of the room is a set up of couches and arm chairs surrounding a fireplace. It's quite cozy and a little too warm, as the fireplace [
(which emits an aura)
] is emitting heat despite having no flame inside of it. From here, all you can see is a log stand, but a glance deeper inside reveals the black vent pipe [
(with yet another aura)
] from the 2nd floor forge. It has an open grate on it, and is emitting a large amount of warm air.

[sblock=Tommy: ]Bookshelf: Several books of scrolls of varying minor types, most prominently divination. Necromancy is absent.

Under the pillows: Two minor evocation auras.

On the desk: Thyrin's spellbook, a minor universal aura.

The fireplace, the black pipe grate, and the dais: Conjuration auras (like the other summoning devices).

The black pipe grate: Minor evocation aura.[/sblock]

"Keldar, there are magical signatures like the other summoning devices coming from the dais, the fireplace, and that black pipe inside the fireplace. Be careful, though; the grate on the pipe has another aura, that might be a magical trap. Of course, there could be nonmagical traps on the others that this spell cannot reveal to me." Tommy paces the bedroom slowly, maintaining concentration on the detect magic and thinking aloud. "Something about this doesn't add up. I only see three conjuration auras in this room, yet we fought five elementals just now, one earth and four fire. One of the fire elementals could have escaped from the forge, that we thought we had sealed, but whence the other one? Could we have missed two on the forge? Does the pipe go up higher to another summoning device?"

"You know what I'm thinking?" says Keldar. "I'm thinking we should take Thyrin's valuables to a safe place, do the best we can with the devices, and close the door on this room. If they can climb the pipes from the hot furnace below, well, I still don't know how to deal with that. I can take a look at this fireplace, though. Anything else I should know?"

OOC: I'll be offline for another day or three. Keldar is willing to disable anything he can, starting with the earth elemental summoning device. He's also willing to be injured doing so no more than once. When it gets to that point, he'll suggest they all retire to a tavern for rest and relaxation.

Taking Tommy's silence as a go ahead, Keldar kneels by the dais in the hallway. The other back away, to let him do his magic. Keldar wiggles his fingers and delicately lifts the cover off the circular construction. He nicks (10) the side of it, though, and a dart flies (25) out of the wall into his shoulder. (3 damage to Keldar) The rogue jumps up and hops around, shaking off the pain. Then he shrugs and reaches back in the contraption to finish the job of disabling the summoning device. A moment later, he realizes that the sting of the dart was more than just the sharp tip, as he feels a little woozy... but he shivers his body and throws off the poison.

"Well that's quite enough of that, I think. What say we grab the goodies and go, yes?" Without waiting for an answer, he heads into Thyrin's room.

OOC: Keldar doesn't actually know where Thyrin's valuables are, since Tommy never told him. (assuming the valuables are magical). But he could search the room. So covaithe, will Tommy go along with Keldar's plan to remove the stuff, or what? And the others, Galwynn, Rapture, Tarag, what do you do?

"All right, Keldar, that'll do. We're here to rescue the wizard, not to rob him."

Tarag follows the rogue, and claps a hand on his (intact) shoulder before he can ransack the bedroom. "Now, hold still while I give you a bit of first aid."

Pointing a finger at the entry wound in Keldar's shoulder, Tarag concentrates for a moment. A pulse of silver light flies from his fingertip, stanching the blood flow but not healing the wound altogether.

Tommy sighs. "The problem is, if we leave this room with its summoning devices intact, how do we know that the next elementals they summon won't be able to come out on higher floors? I will sleep better if we can be sure of consolidating the progress we've made today. I don't want to fight any more lumps of flame than I have to. As for Thyrin's posessions... " Tommy looks at the bookshelf and the desk, clearly tempted. "It's not really theft if we use the supplies at hand to rescue Thyrin, and return what we can... is it? Rapture, what do you think?"

Tommy then wanders over to the bed and looks under the pillows.
