Notes on the Aether (Rae judging)

OOC: Rats, you're right about the CMinW. I forgot about the first one. Trouble is, I'm working from three different computers, and I obviously haven't synchronized the character sheets properly!

IC: Tarag sighs in frustration at having to leave a job half done, then nods in agreement.

"You're right, it's better to come back in one piece and finish the job off. But is there some way we can set things up so we're not ambushed at the top of the stairs every time?"

Having sown that seed in the fertile minds of his companions, he goes back to Galwynn and calls on Chennet's grace.

"I could maybe stop singing songs before we go up. Other than that, I have no idea. Perhaps some sort of diversion.... If we threw something from the stairwell to the far side of the room, and then all rushed in? Or a spell of some kind?" muses Keldar.

After a short pause, Keldar continues, "Or perhaps it won't be a problem on the fourth floor. If we could draw the elemental to the magical barrier, we could pepper it with arrows in safety from the other side. Not that that would be very heroic. But there aren't any blushing young peasant gi- I mean, poor widows or orphans to rescue here, just a very disturbed wizard with strange ideas in home decoration, so I don't see much need for heroics for their own sake."

A disturbing thought strikes Keldar. "Er.... Cassandra said the containment field stopped elementals from going up, but does anyone remember if she said it also stopped them from coming down?"

He takes a nervous look towards the wall that hides the upward stairway.

"Maybe we should be going? Just as soon as I take the handle off the inside of the door, or drive a spike into the frame, or something...."

Galwynn, HP 8/19

A bit rejuvenated from Tarag's healing, Galwynn picks himself up.

"Staying here will invite disaster; I think I must agree with the thie... er, Keldar... on this one. Maybe heading back to the town for the night would be a good idea. Or one of us could run to the temple and pick up some form of healing, and run it back..."

Galwynn thinks for a moment, and then shakes his head, scowling. "No, it is best to retreat, I think. Halina always said 'best to care for a fleeing, living community than to defend a proud, doomed one.'"

"Shooting them with spells and arrows from below isn't a terrible idea. But the range won't be long due to the curvature of the tower. So we'd best make sure they can't come down before trying that. On the other hand, if they can come down, and we can lure them down, then maybe we can turn the tables. It will be them stepping off of a narrow stair and being surrounded by prepared foes, instead of us." Tommy speculates.

ooc: Just so I'm clear, this talk is going on while we gather up the stuff and prepare to leave the tower to rest, right? I mean, we're not waiting for anything else, are we?

"Rapture has a good pair of legs on her," Keldar interjects, "but... mm... what was I going to say? Oh! I don't think I have enough money on me to pay for many more such potions. They don't come cheap. As you'll find out, Galwynn, when I present you with my bill." He winks. "It's good to see you with colour in your face again, even if it is still mostly green. Try not to get hit like that again."

OOC: that was my impression. We're packing methodically.

"They fetched a," Rapture pauses a moment "a lot of attention when I danced with the freefolk."

"Are you done gathering things?" She asks, changing the subject "We should try to get back before dusk, while things are still open in town."

"Now I have another reason to learn some Freefolk songs," says Keldar, smiling. "It's not commonly known, but I'm nearly as good a dancer as I am a poet-singer. Light on his toes is my middle name. Keldar Light on His Toes Silent And Deadly Worst Case Scenario Warbray. I'm looking forward to this afternoon. A gentle stroll through town in the slanting sunlight, perhaps a spot of shopping, Galwynn can confess his sins at the temple, then we can go to a tavern, drink a little too much, sing, dance... talk to the villagers and find out just what they think about Thyrin and his predilection for poison traps...."

Tarag has listened silently to Keldar's prattling. It's the best way. He's helped pack up whatever they're "protecting" and he's ready to go.

"Come on," he says, wincing as his armour chafes blistered flesh, "let's get out of here. I could do with a drink."

Tommy empties the bookshelf of magical scrolls and takes some of the valuable (but mundane) books as well. He also gets the spellbook and the wands. In the desk he finds several kinds of inks and parchment. One ink is a deep, pitch black with glints of silver in it, clearly the type used for scribing arcana. He gathers a few inkwells and as much of the nicer, gold lined parchment as the gang can carry.

With everything of obvious value removed from the living quarters, Keldar closes the door from the outside. It shuts with a loud *thud*. Before he can get to work at trying to get it to stay shut, the thud is followed by a short *thwick!* Like a wind had sucked the door closed. He pulls on it, but it doesn't budge.

You all head downstairs, past the furnace room (where the grates are still closed) and through the living room, where Cassandra is waiting. "Finished for now? I saw that you took care of the last earth pylon. We won't have to worry about any of them moving around through the walls, that's good. And the fire elementals, they're limited to moving through the air, so as long as you closed the grates... yes? Good. Then we just have the two big ones up top left. Unless... well, they should hold."

You ask about the oak door. "Oh, it seals magically whenever its closed. Thyrin usually leaves it open during the day, it's inconvenient to open and close it, but when he sleeps he keeps it shut. It's quite sealed, I'm confident the elementals won't be able to get through it. Unless you need something in there?"

You explain about the things you took. "Hmm... I think that's fine. These lesser elementals are somewhat unpredictable, it's true. That's why they're not allowed on the fourth floor, can't risk the library being destroyed by these mindless lesser beings. Unfortunately, that means you'll have to deal with a more intelligent foe tomorrow. As for the stuff, it may be safer in your hands than it would be here. I was almost saying before... I'm not entirely sure if those pipes will be able to withstand a fire elemental in them all night. They should, for certain, but it's been a while since we tested the integrity... Yes, yes, you should take them. What all do you have?" She takes a quick mental inventory. "Fine, just bring it all back tomorrow. I don't expect any problems, but better safe than sorry."

You inquire about Thyrin's health (and Tommy mentions his spellbook being in his bedroom). "Ah, Master Thyrin is fine, I'm sure. The safe room is well stocked with plenty of food, though it is rather tasteless, or so I hear. He has spellbooks littered all about this place, so don't worry about that either. I suspect he's rather annoyed by this whole thing, but it's more of an inconvenience than a danger. One more day won't kill him, not even close. Yes... well, is that all?"

OOC: If it is, you can head on into the town. I'll award some XP later, before the next in-game day.
