What is so bad about that? They are not profiting from the work and they do state and give thanks to the authors of the content.

Unfortunately- it is still copyright/IP infringement whether ya make money off of it or not (a lot of people don't realize that, but it is). Hence the conversion policy WotC released regarding their modules. Morrus wasn't making any $$ off of them by hosting them and the peeps that converted them didn't make any $$, but they were still in violation and thus removed/altered to conform.

Same thing for NWN and converting IP stuff.

People who love the original work make most of these mods. It is a bit of a tribute to the author. If I published a module 10 years ago and someone converted it and offered it up for free for millions to enjoy, I would be flattered.

Yeah- so would I to tell ya the truth. But- WotC has to protect its property or else they lose it to public domain. Look what happen to the Lovecraft stuff. The Lovecraft estate missed their que and all the HP stuff is now public domain.

Aren't music artists whose original songs are covered by other music artists during live performances usually flattered? (And you are paying money to the cover artist for those)

Some probably are; some probably aren't. I know back in the early 90's my band played with a local Atlanta band called "Strutter" (Kiss cover band) and Strutter eventually got into trouble. Apparently Kiss was not very pleased with them naming their band after one of their songs and playing a lot of their songs on stage. Eventually things were smoothed over, but still... :D

Here is legal dictionary definition of 'censorship':

"To examine (as a publication or film) in order to suppress or delete any contents considered objectionable"

Now, we can argue over whether the owner of this board has the right to censor something that for whatever reason he feels that it is objectionable--I suppose he does. That doesn't not make it censorship, though. It is censorship in that it is 'suppressing something that is considered objectionable'.

One should realize that if you try and ban stuff like this, it will only make it that much more popular. Personally, I've now got incentive to go out and track down and download every single 'illegal' mod made for NWN, even if I never buy the game. But then, that's me.

There is a difference between "objectionable" and "illegal". It would be similar to you coming into my house with illegal substances. My objection to that would have little to do with a moral stance one way or the other, and more to do with trying to cover my a** and not get into legal trouble over it.

I know Morrus had problems a while back with the proper use of the d20 license in the conversion library. Even though he was not the one who made the conversions, he was the one who got flak from the legal department at WotC because he hosted it.

If you are doing something that the owner of these boards interprets as illegal, he is well within his rights to forbid you to do it, and it has nothing to do with censorship. To be honest, anyone posting illegal material on this board is being at the very least an extremely rude guest in Morrus' house. Trying to call this rule from Morrus "censorship" is stretching the definition more than a little.

edit: I went back and reread your quote, and on further reading, it appears that you agree with me more than I thought at first. It's two thirty in the morning here and I just finished a HUGE rum & Coke, so my judgement may be a little impaired. :)

At any rate, I'd be willing to bet that it doesn't matter to Morrus if forbidding this material will make it more popular. Let it be popular on someone else's forum. At least he won't get in trouble for it.
