November Previews: Complete Warrior, Dracomonicon & Dragoneye

I thought it was a kind of interesting idea that they butchered in both the flavor text and mechanics. It really reads like a Barbarian/Sorcerer hybrid, when (IMO) it should read as it's own class.

Can't say I'm too pleased to see that it's gonna be in Complete Warrior. I'm less pleased that it was the preview, but beggars can't be choosers, I guess. Any info on CW is good at this point - it seems we know almost nothing about it, and it comes out this month.

The Rage Mage looks fine. It might be a bit underpowered, if anything, but that's to be expected from a multiclass focused pc. I wouldn't mind playing one mainly for fluff reasons.

I think the rage mage is missing one thing - add into the 'spell rage' text the ability to use the rage/frenzy abilities of the original classes rage or frenzy, and some sort of "levels in this class count towards extra rage abilities of the base class".

Certainly a Barbarian 1/sorceror 6/rage mage 10/eldritch knight 3 would be interesting: 6th level spells, BAB unknown (I'd expect rage mage to be 3/4 or full, so either 14 or 17) with temporary boosts to 20, caster level 13 (6th level spells), caster level 20 while raging. +4 to save DCs.

The same build as a wizard would be able to dump 1 level of wizard for another of eldritch knight, and get 7th level spells.

Or how about combining it with something like mystic theurge? Full character level as caster level is pretty sweet across two casting classes.

Nice, but i still feel its slightly less than optimum. The problem with all such multiclass spell-users/warriors, especially the arcane ones, is that you have to choose between whether to cast or swing in any given round, and the buffing actually takes time. The quicken and special tenser's transformation help, but you are still likely to be a lame fighter and lame caster.

Yeah, those feats from CW are kinda annoying. I don't think they've changed at all! I'm gonna want some mpore previewds before I bother myself.

All those feats won't bother me - as long as most of the recycled feats were formerly broken but are now balanced I will be happy with them.

After all, I'm not going to let Quicker than the Eye 3.0 in my game anytime soon, so if I see a new balanced version of the feat it's basically a new feat from my PoV.

Furthermore, I'd rather see feats than PrCs. Alas, 36 PrCs? Sigh.

Anyone have that table of contents that was posted a while ago?

The divine feats somewhat surprise me...I figured they'd save those for a divine-magic-focused book....but meh.

The rage mage is interesting, but from the name, I expected it to be a *magical* rage...something like +2 Con, +2 Int/Wis/or Cha, +2 Will saves, -1 AC...and then powers revolvign around that new variety of rage...

*shrug* Ah, well, leaves more for me to design. ;)

Talk about your unworthy of republication concepts. (IMO).

Republication: v. n. The process of becoming a Republican. Often accompanied by derhythmication (qv), the process of losing one's rhythm.

The way I see a rage mage working is they spend the first few rounds buffing themselves and then jump into combat unleashing everything while raging. I also think that they should be able to use spell-trigger items while raging. I don't think they're too powerful anyways, even if a player picked a race that got Rage (as a 1st level barbarian) as a racial ability and happened to be LA +0, thus being able to progress completely as a single class wizard or sorcerer and picking the class up after 8th level.

So that's why I lost the ability to dance about a decade ago... :p

Double sigh.

Just imagine if instead of 36 prestige classes they provided examples for how to built 36 different character archetypes by using classes, multiclassing, skills, feats and judicious class alterations (as per PHB and DMG).

THAT would be much more useful to someone like me...

Cheers
