NPC Discussion Thread

A place to discuss new NPCs and new directions for old NPCs, with the intention of keeping some sort of continuity in place.

This is a thread I'd like to have, because I really like using old NPCs, and I like to have new NPCs have some sort of connection to what's already established in the world.

I'd like to start with Varga Renlow. Varga is intended to be the sister of Phineas Renlow, but I wanted to make sure that her backstory didn't contradict any of his. Like, somewhere buried in his dialogue, he never said anything about being an only child, right? So if there's anything I need to know or done wrong, jkason , please let me know.

Additionally, Varga and Phineas's grandfather is going to make an appearance soon, so I doubly wanted to get my story straight.

I think it's a great idea building upon NPCs that have come before. Theoretically, vital information should be listed in the NPCs wiki page and it shouldn't be a problem expanding upon it. In practice, not everything is getting added to the wiki (I still have several NPCs to add, myself) so I think this thread is a good idea.

I was in the adventure that featured Phineas Renlow and I don't recall any mention of any lack of siblings. I'm not the creator of NPC, though.

Design discussion here in the forum is nice, but I would like all the results kept on the wiki because it is easier to link, cross reference and update. It is also easier to search there than in the forum.

I have several that I need to put up in the wiki as well, but my job queue always seems a little longer than my time availability.

I just saw yesterday that you had expanded on the lanky dwarven clan, and wanted to XP you for it, actually, but hadn't spread the wealth properly, it seems. :)

If I ever said Phineas was an only child, it was a mistake. He was always intended to have been from a large family, so I generally assumed lots of siblings, cousins, and other extended family. They were mostly miners (i.e. more "traditional" dwarves), but that's all the further I defined them. I made sure Phineas' wiki entry locked down the source of his nereid immunity, but as I think I mentioned before, I like to try to keep things as loosely-defined as possible to allow for just what you're doing.

Amusingly enough, I think Phineas was one of the only friendly NPC's in that adventure who didn't have a relative in Venza (and thus the secret origin of the adventure's title is revealed), so I get a kick out of finding out he now does. All roads lead to the City of Glass. :)

So, thumbs up from me on the expanded Renlow line. Looking forward to seeing what Grandfather's like.

GlassEye Just noted that Fury said he had an opinion of Enza Furros. Is that just Planks background fluff, or did Fury actually interact with him in an adventure sometime? When I used him in Escort Service, I couldn't find any time that he'd actually appeared before, despite being a character on the wiki.

Fury has never encountered Enza Furros and that comment by Fury is technically unsupported by well, anything at all. So I guess it's just Planks background fluff. Adding a Knowledge (Local) check (1d20+12=15) doesn't give Fury anything more than basic information so I'd chalk it up to a general Planks attitude of distrust for anyone more successful than himself.

I noticed that one of the new additions was 'Lord Maskon.' I don't know how other people feel about it, but I've been trying to avoid using Lord, Dame, Signor, etc. because I feel like we'll end up with 20 entries under those titles.

It can be adjusted, but that's the farthest I've gotten with his name. If you want to come up with a first name, go for it.

I think you have the honor of that, good sir.

You know, I didn't have a first name for Geralt Franco until I put him in the wiki as Signor Franco and had a My God What Have I Done moment (Warning: tvtropes link). So I pulled the name Geralt out of nowhere, or so I thought. About two days later, I realized it was the name of the main character of The Witcher.

....

Oh ... my ... God. I just had an epiphany. Holy hell .... that's hilarious now that I really think about it.

Glad to see those NPCs there! Thanks, sunshadow!

In general, I would agree that avoiding using titles in any character's name as the page name is a good idea. May not apply to NPCs so much but it's also a good idea to avoid beginning page names with articles (a, an, the). And I notice we have two factions 'House Boraga' and 'House Moretti'. Suggestions on improving the naming of these two? Perhaps follow sunshadow's convention and append 'family', e.g. Boraga family? Switch order, e.g. Boraga, House or just leave it off entirely? None of those sound quite right to my ear.:erm:

I just did a big NPC dump on wiki. Just need to add a few places, and I should be caught up from all of my adventures. Hadn't realized just how many little random NPCs popped up over time until I added them all up. Hope everyone enjoys and can make some use out of them.

While not technically NPCs, this is the best place I could find to put this. I have updated the Silver Road entry, and added entries for the Broken Log, Poisson, and the Barony of the Lost Hills. They are all sititing in the Work in Progess category because I didn't know where else to put them. They are alll ready to be moved to more permanent categories, however. I also updated the Tritower entry with a few more details.

I'll get the wiki pages made later this week, but I'm posting this so SK can figure out where he wants to organize them when they get made, and to see if anyone has better suggestions for the some of the names.

The Venzan Academica Magica Sitting at the center of the District of Learning (feel free to suggest a different name; it's the best I can think of at the moment), so named for the high concentration of schools, museums, tutors, and other forms of scholarly study and learning, the Academica is almost as old as human settlement in the city, and it's good sized campus forms the heart of the district. It is one of the elite magical schools of this continent, and students come from all over to study here, many spending most of their lives here in pursuit of ever more knowledge and learning. Known for several notable reasons, the biggest one is the Reality Machine(again, feel free to suggest a better name), an impressive and unique device that has its own department and building. This machine combines all of the different disciplines to create a virtual representation of reality. While others have long tried to copy it, only a handful have successfully managed to understand the basic theory of its operation, and no one has ever produced a known working model of any scale.

Dr. Thaddeus Roustabout , male gnome illusionist, and one of the tenured professors in the Department of the Machine, charged with the maintenance and ongoing development of the Reality Machine.

Dr. Moritimus Runehouse , male dwarven abjurationist, and one of the tenured professors in the Department of the Machine, charged with the maintenance and ongoing development of the Reality Machine.

'Academica Magica' seems ideally suited for Bayanmaliit rather than a separate district predominantly of schools, (most of which would be scattered throughout the city anyway...).

Seems reasonable enough to me. I wasn't the one who built Venza, so I didn't know the best place to put it. Hence, getting input before putting it on the wiki.
