NPC to PC

Have you ever created and played an NPC that you ended up wanting to some day play as a PC?

Did you ever get to play that character as a PC in a game?

Very often,

and no I rarely play as a player and since most of my very interesting NPC are evil (I leave the PC be the cool Good character) I never had that chance.

Only one -- Dodge, an NPC fighter that my PCs rescued from the Neogi slavers in Wildspace.

He carried little armor, a series of explosive and utility crossbows, and a hell of a lot of attitude. (Think a cross between Ben Grimm and Green Arrow). He also served as ship's bartender and cook.

And my players thoroughly enjoyed him. I almost wished I'd had a chance to play him as a PC myself. :)

Yes - I created Stivor, a wood-elven ranger NPC back in the 1E days that eventually developed psionics and replaced my regular PC (who was turned to stone for a long stretch of time and unrecoverable). I played him as a PC for several months, then got back my regular PC, and Stivor rejoined the ranks of the NPC's of my campaign. I've used him in every campaign I've run since.

Yes, I have. In fact, one time I was GMing in a shared world (with PC's in different areas and not interacting), and had the very NPC I created show up as my PC in the other game on that world.

That was interesting and fun.

Totally man, back in 2e....

My group had several DMs, and we had kind of an open round-robin "who ever feels like running runs" shared world. Just about all of my really cool 2e PCs started out as a NPC run by me. Then another DM would run some backstory for that character... made for a crazy web of storyline... covering several planes, 5 settings, and about 2,000 years.

Was good times.

I do it all the time in my pbems. Sometimes a cool NPC in a game I DM i turn into a PC to play in someone else's game. The opposite also happens. Sometimes I create a character for someone;s game, then turn that character into an NPC in my own game. It is especially cool when I have a DM who is also being DMed by me in my own game, and he sees the character I am playing in his game as an NPC in the game I am DMing to him. I ahve done it inumerous times and everytime the player realises he has seen that NPC before, but as a PC roleplayed by me in a game, he finds it exciting. =)
