(NWN) Help me with Computer Stuff plz

turtle

First Post
I am going to buy a computer. I want it to absolutely rock while playing NWN. I know that GeForce 4 graphics cards are the best but I heard that CPU limitations decrease the advantage of having one. I want to know: what the best set-up I can get without becoming superfilous <sic>?

In addition I want to know what a reasonable price for the components would be as I don't want to get ripped off.

Specifically I want to know about

Processor
RAM
Graphics Card
Sound Card
Monitor
Anything else important

Thanks people!

Keep in mind if you get a Geforce4 you want the GF4 Ti (the Ti part is very important), DO NOT get a geforce4 MX, they aren't even as good as a Geforce3.

As for everything else the bigger the number the better.

me too!

I am also going to upgrade when my beloved NWN
finally comes out (rumour - September) :)

I might even just buy a whole new system, what i have is two years old now :(

Sheesh spending $1000+ (AUS) just to play a computer game :)

This is what i MIGHT get:

Athlon 1.8 Gig Processor
256 RAM maybe 512 :) (depending what ram costs in 4 months time )
Geforce4 Graphics Card
17" Monitor

I want a 19" but they are just too damn expensive :(

I feel your pain.

Computes can be used for something else?

As a general advice, it doesn't pay off to buy the state of the art stuff in computer technology, except for RAM, Graphics adapter and such. A good Motherboard is also quite important.

The processor speed is not THAT important, you can save a lot of money by just buying the 3rd fastest instead of the fastest available. I'd rather get an Athlon instead of a Pentium CPU. Cheaper and faster usually.

A good monitor is also worth to spend some money on!
If you can, definitely get a 19", rather than a 17"!

Bye

So, here's what I'm getting...

You're not the only one who's getting a new computer mostly so that he can play NWN. I'm doing the same thing. Been saving for about a year now, and I'm getting ready to start ordering stuff as soon as my CD matures again. The following info was from Pricewatch.com about two weeks ago; prices may very well have changed a bit.

Anyway, here's what I'm getting and what I'm looking at in regards to price.

Components I Need (Total Cost : ~$500)
  • Motherboard – nForce Chipset (Abit NV7m) - ($120)
  • Processor (Athlon XP 1.6 GHz) - ($140)
  • Case w/ 400 W Power Supply - ($40)
  • 512 MB of DIMM DDR RAM - ($100)
  • 40.0 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive (WD or IBM?) - ($80)
  • Fan/Heat Sink/random extra bits - ($20)
Components I Have
  • Floppy Drive
  • 12 GB Hard Drive
  • DVD-ROM Drive
  • CD-W Drive

The nForce chipset motherboard comes with quite a number of parts built-in - a good sound card, a good-but-not-amazing video card (I believe it's a gForce 2 MX, not entirely sure on the specs), and a network card. It's going to be a very solid machine, but I'm working on a limited budget, so it's not quite everything I want. If you were looking for the best of everything, I'd advise you get a GeForce 4 Ti, as was mentioned above by another poster. Depending on how NWN ends up running, you might need another 256 meg stick of RAM in there. I really can't see it being that useful, though. A 7200 RPM hard drive will help out performance notably over a cheaper 5400 RPM one. I would definitely advise AMD over Pentium - they're just better procesors all told.

Also, keep in mind that this price is for a pile of parts. I have the technical know-how to turn that pile of parts into a working computer. If you don't, you're going to have to figure the cost of hiring somebody to do so into your total cost.

Alot of people are saying June, but I don't see how that's possible. The Beta hasn't even started yet (though it should be starting any day now). I can't see this game having less than 1 month of Beta, and then rushed out to the stores.

I'd say July is the earliest we can expect it, though August and September aren't out of the question, either.
