NWN ininfinite Dungeons

Anybody tried this yet? It looks kind of fun. I have a game hosting question for you NWN pros out there as well.

Looks like it might be fun. What's really irksome is you can't run it on a dedicated server because of their stupid copy protection.

Ok, that's what I was asking about. Say I have it running on my machine, I can set it up so that others can come in over the net and join in correct?

You can have others play mutliplayer only if the person hosting is running the full copy of NWN.

Normally when hosting a game, you could run a dedicated server on a seperate PC and then you'd and your friends would all connect to that, so that you were a client machine the same as them. The dedicated server was free, multiplatform, and had lower system requirements.

Because of the copy protection, the machine hosting the game has to be running the full version of NWN. Typically, this would mean that if you wanted to play, your PC would be both client and server. To run a dedicated server with the new module, you'd need a seperate computer, a second licensed copy of NWN, and a second licensed copy of the module.

Bioware has been very supportive of the multiplayer community and they deserve a lot of credit for it, but this is really, really obnoxious. This module more than any other really cries out to be running on a dedicated 24/7 server.

Ok that's how I thought it would work. I think my machine can handle it. But I share the game on my client/server machine on the Bioware multiplayer site and the people that are joining in come in that route correct? (As you can tell I haven't done this before)

Um, I guess. I never hosted for the world at-large -- I always hosted private games for my friends. Running the original campaign as a co-operative multiplayer was a lot of fun. Since we all swore off playing it single player, it was all unknown territory. Really the closest thing to on-line D&D I'd played at that point.

Assuming you have your firewall set up right to permit the inbound connections, you shouldn't have any trouble. Hosting this module isn't any different than any other if your playing on the PC that's hosting.

Well, I think on the Bioware server you can set the game up so it is password protected. Give the password to your mates and away you go.

At least I think that's how it works.

It certainly looks like it might be a blast. I hope that ID and PotSC will eventually be marketed like the previous Premium modules were, but I have my doubts to whether Atari would go for that.

Now if I want I could just play ID by myself correct? Nobody connecting into my machine, or anything, just play it solo like the OC.

I was damn close to buying this but the more I read on the Bioware forums the more it seems like Diablo. I decided to pass on it. Plus it will just suck away from my WoW playing anyway.
