NYC Abandoned Tunnels

I'm Thinking of doing a one shot d20 Modern session in the classical D&D 3rd edition vain...

Players will create level 4 characters and meet at a local Nightclub/Bar. The Bartender asks them to track down someone for them who's gone missing in the abandoned tunnels of NYC.

What begins is a small Dungeon Romp when they come across some old closed off hidden tunnels underneath the nightclub.

The deeper they go, the more "stranger" the encounters get! At first they will battle crazy homeless people, hordes of rats, etc...

Eventually they will hit a junction thats a point of no return, and Must battle Vampiric Were-rats, and try to survive.

I was thinking of this: If they survive and see the tunnels all the way through, They come across a Fetid giant River that seems to travel into some dark fog.

A tiefling guide in a canoe offers them a ride down the Fetid river. They realise that they are on the river Styx, and the Tiefling is taking them across it.

If the Players like it, then I'll start a campaign across the planes, maybe some alternate history earth, or a strange planescape type campaign.

What do you guys think?

I like it. Reminds of me of Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. If you haven't read it you may want to, it may give you some neat ideas about blending a "fantasy" world with a "normal" world.

Thanx for the link.

I was thinking that when they find the boarded up door to the abandoned section, they will hear voices behind it.

Of course when they go down the stairs they find that the lights in the abandoned section are still working, and see an old de-railed subway car and a boulder cave in on both sides.

The way back up will be bricked off, and the only way they can proceed through the blocked off sections is actually walking through the old de-railed car. It acts as a portal through the rocks.

After that I'm still debating on some "odd" encounters, as well as and Underworld Ecosystem.

Any suggestions?

You should make the Tiefling be the bartender- gives the ending that Tales From The Crypt kind of feel.

Good Idea!

Like I said, if the players like this session, I'm prolly going to continue it. Maybe the dungeon romp was the Bartender/Tieflings test, if they made it that far, then maybe he could use them in his world.

Reminds me of a short story by Jack Finney in which his character discovers a third level to Grand Central Station (Note: GCS only has two levels) which leads to the 1800's, with trains departing to all parts of the country as normal.... for 1830 or so, that is...

Something like that, but the Tieflings use it as an entrance to our world to recruit Mortals.

I was thinking that recently the other planes never realised "Earth" existed until someone found a portal to it.

If I do decide to create a campaign world, I'm prolly going to need a good backstory on why Humanity has been left untouched, as well as why the Tieflings need recruits.

I was thinking of doing a tie in similiar to Planescapes "Blood War"
