Oathbound Campaigns?

So how many people are playing in Oathbound?

One of my friends completely screwed up his campaign with his utter lack of common sense and understanding of the subtle limits of power in the d20 system.

He allowed us to pick any character type we wanted with an ELC of up to +7 and then gave us 7 levels. I, being one of the few who doesn't like playing freaks, played a 7th level human monk.

Boy was I overshadowed. It wasn't too bad for my part because I was just there to have fun, but one of the other players, who picked a powerful race, half-fiend or something, was pissed because one of the other players found some off the wall +5 ELC race and was using a Ninja from one of the AEG books and was whining up a storm.

Short lesson for me, if the GM doesn't understand how the game system works, don't play.

Anyone have any campaigns going on though that didn't crash and burn? I'd be interested to hear what others are doing with the setting.

I'm easing my players into it slowly. They just hit 7th level, and each party member has been visited by one of the feathered fowl. It's strange, really...they won't discuss the meetings with each other in character. I hope to pull them to the Forge at 8th level.

I'm running my second Oathbound campaign and I'm allowing pretty much anything. The characters started at ECL 7 and we had a hamatula, feral half-ogre, succubus, centaur monk and now have an anthropomorphic whale so, yes, this is a pretty weird group. There's even a human ex-paladin going down the blackguard road and who will soon start taking levels in half-fiend.

One thing though, despite some fairly awesome ability scores (including Con), the lack of hit points is a real issue. Level penalties are a high price to pay but really balance things out.

As for a 7th level human monk, personally I think such a character would be overshadowed in almost any campaign. I just find that monks are possibly less effective than bards. Sure, they're great against enemy spellcasters but otherwise they have too many talents but not enough focus.

Oathbound

We loved our Oathbound campaign.

Right now the PCs are doing a lot of dimension hopping, but I hope to pull them back there at some point.

Oh man, I need to look up the demagogue or inquisitor class for a PC I been working with.

No kidding, considering you were comparing a 7th level character to 14th level ones.

I think you should explain the ECL rules to him again.

I would like to run an oathbound campaign but I have to many things I'd like to run. So oathbound is about number 3 on my list of things to run.

I like the guy. He has a flair for GMing but is a dummy when it comes to 3rd edition rules. He's a great Warhammer or SLA GM and can rock Battlelords like there's no tomorrow but give him a system with a lot of books like Rifts or D20 and he gets stupid. "Have to see what this does when I houserule this and change that and by the way, did I mention that sorcerer's use Wisdom instead of Charisma because it's force of will which Wisdom represents because it effects your Will saving throw!"

Be awhile before we let him GM d20 again of any sort!

I've run a couple successful Oathbound campaigns. One thing I like about the setting is that its so open...it allows you to use just about anything. That being said, in my experience, any game with absolutely no limits is almost certainly doomed for munchkinny failure. There's just too much stuff out there to keep track of; just about any DM would be overwhelmed and unable to take into account for balance issues.

I mentioned the campaign I'm DMing and it's pretty open but subject to final approval from me. The players are enjoying the ability to create pretty much any sort of character they like... while I love a world where Chaositech doesn't seem to be that strange.... ;)
