Of Sound Mind and Expanded Psionics Handbook

SDragoon

First Post
I'm a fairly long-time player that is just now starting to begin to DM, and as such I have been looking at various adventures to help get started.

With all of the praise for "Of Sound Mind" (and the fact that I really like psionics), I was thinking of picking it up.

The question is, how compatible is it with the Expanded Psionics Handbook ruleset?

If it is not, are there any plans to update it?

Thanks,
SDragoon

Welcome to the boards! Okay, you've been here since MArch, but two posts qualifies for a greeting. I wrote OSM, and I think that conversion should be a snap. A few fast thoughts:

- You'll have to run the first combat encounter (the farm-related one) as is, because the XPH template for such creatures takes away a bit of the fun.

- Rules for augmententation actually make it easier to explain what's happening in the town.

I don't believe that Fiery Dragon is planning to convert it themselves, although they might do so on a pdf. I'm hoping to have time to write up conversion notes myself. If I do, I'll post them here.

SDragoon,

Of sound Mind is well written and has a lot of new ideas. The material itself is not very conpatible with the new XPHB. You will need to do some rework of the material to make it fit 3.5 better. Bruce Cordell in conjunction with Malhavoc Press has written a few good Psionic adventures and source material. And with their new release Hyperconscious:Exploration in Psionics, Bruce has up dated his old material from Malhavoc Press and it is also an adventure for a 7th level party.

Hope this helps.

Hey, you're going to make me convert it just to prove to you it's not a big change, aren't you? :)

One could add Mindscapes Psionic Combat to make it much more "flashy." Right?

Welcome to the boards!

Thanks! Obviously, I'm a lurker. I do enjoy soaking up the knowledge though.

I think I'll go ahead and pick up OSM soon, based on what I'm hearing here.

SDragoon, I recently ran OSM (right before the XPH came out) and it had the single most dramatic conclusion of any module I've ever run!

I think the conversion would be a snap. I mean really, there aren't that many things that need converting in there.

The conversion will not be hard, but the two systems are quite different. The DM will need to make some choices as to what to keep from the originial source and what to change. The XPHB dropped some powers, renamed others, changed the way meta psionic feats work, added overpowering, and removed powers from the general psion list and added them to the restricted lists.

I had a major opponent for my PCs that was built in the 3.0 psionic rules, when I went to upgrade the NPC to the 3.5 XPHB I was surprised how different the character came out. Not only did the powers and feats change slightly, but the flavor of the NPC changed as a result. Also, one of my players revamped his character to the new XPHB rules, and it completely changed the powers and abilities for the character. For example fly was on the general psion list until the 3.5 XPHB, since he had the fly power before the rule changes, and he used the power often, we had to make a decision to let him keep the power (preserving story), or keep with in the rules and pick another power.

Yes get OSM it was fantastic, download the updated handouts from the webpage though. We loved it. Heck we still have our base of operations just outside Bellhold.

Speaking of .. wasn't there supposed to be an OSM2 coming down the pipe ?

Great work Pirate cat.

There was and a three even, but things change so now it's unlikely.

Hopefully PC will see this and update on how things stand now.
