D&D 5E Official conversion guides from ALL editions are coming this fall!

Well, that was fun

"We’ve already had DMs cook up conversion guides for earlier editions. We’ll be producing official ones that will be freely available in the fall, once we dig ourselves out from beneath the three core rulebooks." - Mike Mearls.

Just imagine if these could walk you through how not just to convert material, but how to use material from other editions.

IOW, wouldn't it be cool if it said, "Here's how you can use 4e powers, 3e prestige classes and 2e kits in your game"?

Man, if WotC had handled the 4E rollout like they are doing with 5E, there'd have been a lot less angst in 2008.

Finally, there's leadership that respects those that play (or heavily bought into) other editions. Kudos to WotC!

I can see how they could physically do that. But it would involve having you make large numbers of calculations on the fly. It wouldn't be a feasible way to run a game - the maths just isn't similar enough between them. They'd have to be converted, either in advance or on the go.

That was his point. Stuff would need to be converted, not used directly. 5e is cool, but it's not the miracle game that can use rules from any other system seamlessly.

If he was implying what you are, he would have said you need to convert stuff in advance. The way the sentence was written implied that you had to convert things in advance, or convert things on the go (assuming this means as you are playing instantly).

I hate arguing semantics, but you might have missed what Jester wrote. He thought it would be cool if you could just use rules as is from older editions, no converting necessary. Morrus said this is unlikely, you'd likely have to convert it, either before hand or on the fly.

No I completely understand. My question is what is the point of the sentence. Of course you would have to convert before hand or on the fly. What other possible way is there? It's like when people say "may or may not" why even say it? Of course you may or may not, there isn't any other possible outcome so why say the sentence? It's trivial and adds nothing to the conversation. Same as when people say "it is what it is" of course it is what it is, if it was what it wasn't then there would be a billion different things that the thing was that it wasn't. Sorry, these are pet peeves of mine that really bug me. It's like someone is just saying something when they have nothing of meaning to contribute, much like me and this post.
