OGL Cloning 4e?

I wonder if anyone could use the OGL to print something almost, but not quite, like 4e, without getting at all involved in GSL.

Please don't associate the name of my product with this idea!

Pleasepleaseplease don't. Please.

OSRIC was used to re-invigorate game mechanics that are virtually unsupported, and I'm on record as having said that if WOTC reprinted 1e, I would cease distribution of OSRIC entirely. I stand by that.

Using the OGL to re-create 4e is completely different. I do not condone any attempt to reproduce 4e using the OGL.

We appreciate your need to remain disassociated from this.

As was pointed out in another thread OSRIC is mentioned for this effort because it is the closest concept and by using the name people can wrap their heads around the idea better. Unfortunately a 4e OSRIC will remain the term people use until someone either starts something specific or another name is agreed on.

Edit: On the bright side you created a verb.

I don't want to see 4E cloned.

What I would like to see, is some of the design changes that I consider to be improvements in 4E (the healing mechanism, disease, and greater accessibility of noncombat magic to nonspellcasters, for example) reinvisioned and implemented differently in an OGL game.

I don't think we'll see too much of this in pathfinder, because a big part of their mission is to maintain a great deal of compatibility with 3.5 campaigns .

I don't know anyone doing that and I consider it ethically questionable and legally perilous.

I do know of someone working on porting some better ideas in 4e back to 3e.

Neither do I, but I do want to see a 4E GSL where I can at least publish my own version of the Rogue or the Elf (or any other class or race, for the matter) if I find their own to be lacking in any way. The thing that Wizards is currently offering is probably not worth the time and effort.

Cheers,

I'm not a lwayer but it seems like you still can... Just don't call it an elf or a rogue. It says you can't redifine terms, but I didn't see anything that says you can't add new terms.

You can do this.

Just don't call it a Rogue or an Elf. Call it a Giltonio Rogue, or a Santos Elf.
