you would have to include both the 3.5 ogl and 4.0 ogl in your book, assuming the 4.0 ogl is the same as the 3.5 ogl, unless the 4.0 ogl includes 3.5 as well.

Since they seem to be saying 4e will be released under -the- OGL, and not -a- OGL, one hopes they're sticking with the OGL we all know and love...or at least think fondly of, sometimes.

So what if I as an aspiring game designer decided to write a 3.5 game after 4e that mimics some aspects of the new game and make my own PHB, DMG or MM?

Alternative20. A d20 game that uses the best aspects of 3.5e and 4e.

Probably not a problem. Wizards -cannot- "take back" anything they've released under the OGL, and that includes the current 3.5 SRD. You can publish 3.5-compatible material for the next 80 years if you like.

While JB may have been mistaken, you will notice that there are no d20s anywhere near the 4e announcement. I'm guessing that while there will be an OGC SRD, the "Requires the use of the Dungeons and Dragons Player's Handbook" stuff will go the way of the dodo OR require a paid license.

This is speculation on my part. I know nuh-think.

It seems to be accurate though. I read a transcript of one of the seminars where it was said that they were considering this model going forward. They also considered pure OGL (no d20 STL) but some publishers are concerned about getting "left out" when people don't realize what ruleset they use. It's looking more and more like OGL for self-publishers, plus a for-pay d20 STL with a fee for those that can afford it.
