Oh dear... bye bye NeverWinter

As disappointing as it is when a game is delayed, I think this move is for the better. I don't think Atari has ever released a D&D game that wasn't hideously buggy on release, to the point it was almost unplayable. Daggerdale certainly didn't buck the trend.

The extra year could turn Neverwinter into a truly great game, rather than a buggy mess we'd all sooner forget. For that, I'm prepared to wait!

Cryptic hasn't released any game yet that wasn't bugged and feeling incomplete at release either. That Perfect World seems to be insisting on higher quality is probably one of the many good moves coming from the acquistion.

I love Startrek Online, but the latest big update hurt STO more than it helped it, simply because the team just didn't get the resources it needed from Atari. The same can't have been better for Neverwinter, really.

From what I've heard and seen, Daggerdale is D&D in name only.

You could be a lot clearer which Neverwinter is being delayed.

Agreed, I also read the thread title, and its being posted in the 4E forum gave me expectations of a different sort.

In this case, it bothers me not at all.

Ah, but there's the larger picture. I'm sure WotC planned the release of the Neverwinter Campaign Guide to more or less coincide with the release of the MMO - 'product cross pollination' to attract customers in the MMO sector to give the pen and paper version a try (one of the stated design goals of 4E, if memory serves). With the MMO being pushed back to 2012, that synergy effect is severely weakened.

WotC' 4E run has been in really bad luck with such things. You'd have expected them to capitalize on the Ravenloft boardgame's success by bringing out a 4E Ravenloft Campaign Guide at the time (rather than the comparatively undescript 'Gloomwrought'). But they never did because the product wasn't ready/up to their standards.

Exactly what Atari says now about the MMO - not ready, not up to standards.

WotC Press Release said:
In addition, the acquisition of Cryptic Studios by Perfect World Entertainment Inc. from Atari in July 2011 has delayed the Neverwinter PC Game scheduled for release later this year. Perfect World will be investing in a more immersive experience for release in late 2012.

The above quote from WotC's press release seems to indicate Neverwinter will still have a 2011 release with a different game being released end 2012...

No, that's just good press release writing. That entire quotation is referring to Neverwinter. It was previously scheduled for a late 2011 release. It is now scheduled for a 2012 release, and the extra time will be used to create a more immersive Neverwinter experience.

Real bummer for WotC and their big crossover marketing campaign. They have the RPG stuff, FB game, and this game all coming out together, oh, and the novels. Now, not so much. Someone is in trouble.
