Oh the life of a barbarian!!!

Hong.... such a sensible and serious post... I am appalled! ;)

Souljourner: DR does not stack if not specifically mentioned. No chance :D

Note that Improved Trip requires Combat Expertise as a prerequisite, and Combat Expertise explicitly doesn't function while raging ... which begs the question of whether Improved Trip functions while raging.

Hyp answered this quite nicely in another thread... it says you cannot use Expertise, but you don't have to use Expertise to apply Improved trip.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one disappointed in a "non-hilarious" Hong post...

I know you said dwarf but I feel humans make great barbarians. As a fighter type they need feats more than other classes IMO, so the bonus feat comes in handy.

34 point buy I like
Str 16+2 from leveling=18
DEX 14
Con 16
INT 14
Wis 10
CHR 8

Feats
exotic prof spiked chain
compat expertise
improved trip
power attack
cleave

And at 7sp a level you can have tons of skills and even get some good cross class skills. If you didn't go human a single level of fighter or just wait 2 levels.

Here are my thoughts about barbarian races...

Human: Humans make good barbarians, but then again, humans can excel at any class. The free feat you recieve for being a human will come in useful, since barbarians don't recieve any bonus feats.

Dwarf: Dwarves make excellent barbarians. Their +2 Con gives them a boost to their hit points and fort saves, and also allows them to remain in range longer. Their slow movement speed is offset by the barbarian's fast movement, and a dwarf barbarian can wear medium armor and carry heavy loads without being slowed down. Dwarves also recieve saving throws against spells and poisons, dodge bonuses against giants, stability bonuses against being tripped or overrun, and attack bonuses against orcs and gobinoids. A dwarf barbarian will be very difficult to kill.

Half-Orc: It's possible for a half-orc barbarian to have 20 Strength at level 1. A half-orc barbarian using a greatsword or greataxe along with the Power Attack feat is capable of dealing tremendous amounts of damage.

Elf: Elf barbarians aren't particularly great. Their penalty to Con reduces their hit points (and barbarians need lots of hit points, as they'll be getting hit a lot), and also reduces the length of their barbarian rages. The dex bonus, resistance to enchantment spells, and immunity to sleep are useful, but not useful enough to make elves good choices for barbarians.

Half-Elf: Half-elves aren't particularly great as barbarians, but then again, half-elves aren't particularly good at anything. :D

Halfling: Halflings make decent barbarians, although their small size and penalty to strength means that they won't be inflicting as much damage as a medium-sized barbarian. The extra dexterity and AC bonus due to size can be useful to barbarians, as can the bonuses to saving throws.

Gnomes: Much like halflings, gnomes are hindered by their small size and low strength. Gnomes do recieve a bonus to Con, which helps their hit points and ability to rage, as well as attack bonuses against kobolds and goblinoids, and dodge bonuses against giants. Gnomes make average barbarians.

'This DR applies in addition to any damage reduction you have from other sources.'

Seems pretty cut and dry, if you add that is the same as stacking.

10th level Human Barbarian
Feats: Power Attack, Cleave, Great Cleave, Weapon Focus Great Sword, Improved Critical Great Sword.
(If you want a dwarf, drop the great cleave or improved critical; trade great sword for great axe or dwarven war axe)

49k
Rhino Hide armor (5165 gp)
+1 Adamantine Holy Great Sword (21,350)
Belt of Giant Strength +4 (16k)

total spent 42k. 7k for misc potions, horse, money, women, and wine.

Stats
Str 18 +2 levels +4 belt = 24 +4 when raging = 28
Dex 14
Con 14
Int 10
Wis 8
Chr 12

To Hit when raging full power attack: +9 +1 +1 = +11
Damage: 2d6 base + 2d6 holy + 20 power +1 magic + 13 str =4d6 +34
crit: 17-20/x2

charge: +2 to hit/+2d6 to damage/-2 to ac

and finally, what are good feat choices for barbarians.
I am looking for some good ideas for a barbarian character.
If you can supply a good build please do.
34 Points, preferably a dwarf. 10th level. 49k treasure.

Roll with it DR? That was not the question, sure that one stacks. ;)

But adamant armour, Barbarian DR and Dwarven Defender DR won't.

I'd go for a dwarven Bbn2/FtrX or Bbn5/FtrX with Urgrosh and TWF chain.

Level 10... at Lvl11, the bbn5/Ftr6 build would have 6 attacks with additional WS goodness... ah well.
