OK a 300$ Budget...

Bad_English

First Post
300$ Budget for OGL / D20 games or supliments.

I have:
ConanD20 1st Print
Skull and Bones D20
Darwins World HB 2.0
Bulldogs!D20 (Sci-Fi)
Call of Cthuhlu D20
(D&D 3.0 core volumes)

Now given the above, and the budget.

Tell me the best Content, Bang for the Buck and Why in a short statement. :)

I should qualify with another point EXISTING publications, as I got bit by The D20 Gamma World Players Handbook due to anticipation of a product and not the actual book.

[initiate; troll dodge feat]
And yes the editing of the first print of Conan D20 was bad, but given the responce of Mongoose, I am more than pleased.
[end; troll dodge feat, Rolling... DOH!!!!]

But, if you feel strongly about that line of books and have a convincing objective arguement, please feel free to post. ;)

I'll counter saying I liked d20 Gamma World, but it really should have been MORE in the players book, and some of the stuff should have been in a GMs guide. Realistically, they should've piled Players/Mutant&Machines/Sect-Factions as a Players book, and Gamemasters/Out of the Vaults/etc as a GM's guide and sold two $40 books.

I just think it was poor layout and planning, but I love the concepts given.

Just my .02cents

As for the above books, I can't comment, none interest me, sorry :(

Book: Psychic's Handbook
Publisher: Green Ronin
Price: $16.95
Why: An awesome skills and feat based psychic power system that could be used in tandem with, or in place of, magic/psionics. A real usefull book, with some great new stuff. If you put a cap on ranks in Psychic skills, it could also work really well with Skull & Bones.

What are you most interested in?

Stargate is great if you like a really crunchy rules system and Sci Fi.
Ditto spycraft if you are more into espionage.

On the other hand, I note with considerable interest that all the books oyu have to date (except the 3.0 core books) have pretty much been one shot books with no supplements.

About my choices...

I chose the from my former game play/reading experiance books that held imagination. For instance I still have much of the old Star Frontiers gaming series and Played Gamma World 2nd and have the Gamma World 3rd ed. boxed set. I regretably got rid of all my second ed AD&D and Call Of Cthuhlu before the D20 revolution got into full swing.

I also have been collecting stuff from the Web, some of the best work and enjoyment seems to from the fan sites for Gamma World and Traveller (all rules; of which I have never to my regret played), but returning to the subject.

I do have couple of the Races of Renown from Green Ronin and in my selection choose a solid plug-in able reference with a dash of nostagia for the classic races and settings.

-GW D20-
But in my defence... :heh: I simply was disappointed that the GW D20 Players book seemed so lacking in playable features and felt it was a ploy for money. I understand that there is a more favorable responce towards the later contributions. But if I were to purchase any more of the GWD20 I would have to look and read through the books rather than buy, based on that experiance and not the enjoyment of the former editions, sad though it seems.

I guess in answering what I am looking for; is what fires off your imagination and sends it at a frenetic pace.

Rules Synthesis/Variations, for example like in the Barsoom Tales posts, I would like to hear what others have to say on what, they think would, 'fire the imagination'. What D20 or 3.x ed books did it for them and if they had a 300$ budget...like me and why. I hope I am a little more clear as I live up to my name quite well.

OK give me some ideas on Traveller T20 as a starter...see what happened here.

Thats the ticket and to the point.

283$ and change to go...

Thank You Macbeth.

I have a feeling of irony in making that statement. ;)

Glad I could help.

A little more time has given me another idea.

Book: Mutants and Masterminds
Publisher: Green Ronin
Price: $32.95 (you can probably find it a little cheaper in some places. I got it for $30)
Why: If you are at all a Superhero/Comic book fan, this is the best system I have ever seen, definately the best d20 Supers rules. The presentation is awesome (Comic book worthy art, nice paperstock, Full color), which accounts for some of the cost. Makes the d20 system roll over and do tricks.

You might also look at the Dragonlance Campiagn setting. A fairly good book made into a great deal by Amazon's $15 price tag. Paying $15 for a decent full color hardcover is hard to pass up. It's not an awesome book, but it is very good, and at $15 it's cheaper then black and white books half its size. Worth considering

Wow

I thought I was up on the comp for a while...I am on vacation and I stick to that excuse. ;)

Thanks again...Macbeth.

That would make a good movie title, you know. :)

I mean the sequel to "The Boondock Saints."

"Thanks Again, Macbeth."

Hmmmmm I called dibs, now where is my agents number? :p

Book: Horizon: Grimm
Publisher: Fantasy Flight Games
Price: $14.95
Why: Play as a kid in a nightmarish fairy tale land. What more could you ask for? Very cool system of 6 level classes like Bully, Popular Kid, Nerd and Outcast. Does a nice job of modeling the various traits of kids in an RPG.

========================================================

Book: Requiem for a God
Publisher: Malhavoc
Price: $?? (I bought it electronically from RPGNow for ~$10)
Why: If you are into fantasy gaming (I'm not sure from your list of books), this will certainly set your mind a reelin'. Or at least, it did for me. What happens when a god dies and crashes to earth? Lots of interesting things, let me tell you...

========================================================

Also, let me second Mutants and Masterminds and Spycraft. Both are brilliant. I wish I could read them again for the first time...

Not my cup of tea, but my youngest daughter would love that completely without question. She currently going through the goth(fringe; likes the creative enviroment considers the clothing...dumb), creative, 17year old going on 30 phase. Thank you for her birthday present.

Hmmm... I do have the budget now for both of those M&M, and Spycraft. And as far as Requiem for a God....Now although, I have not read about it much at all, I will seriously need to look into this! The concept is awesome and evocative, hey throw that into CoC D20, or....or, Man! :D

Thank you Jason.

Book: Aasimars & Tieflings
Publisher: Green Ronin
Price: $19.95
Why: A well written book, plus Planetouched are cool (I'm a Planescape fan). It also includes rules for Planetouched variant and other-races-planetouched.
Has Cambions, what more needs to be said?? :D I guess Nephilim are cool to, but evil rawks! :) There are feats and prestige classes, and new monsters. A good add-on if you plan on hitting the Planes any time soon.
