Exactly - quantum entanglement is the "you" in your analogy.
The original photon is destroyed in the process, but the copy is identical in all ways, so in theory, it is the original.
That's why something like this on the atomic level (say, being able to do this to a hydrogen atom) will be a major breakthrough.
