ya, thats a plus, some ppl like to gripe about anything that doesn't fit the bill of what would fly in their campaign, so I tend to expect it, this was a very plesant suprise.

Ya, that can happen. Heck, I've cut into a few people from time to time. But your question was in the core rules and then the extention within the ELH. And out of all the crap in the ELH, that was the resonible stuff.

I've pondered this one myself, in fact -- I've got some arctic baddies in my game, sort of half-ogres bred and raised in the tundra, who use ranger skills and ride polar bear mounts. And I'd say a Dire Kodiak would make a great mount for the chieftain...*evil DM cackle*

But yeah, Handle Animal is required to rear and train them, and you would need a specific Ride skill for the creature, for example Ride (lion). It'll probably be up to your DM whether Ride allows you to ride all versions of your mount, normal or dire, but at worst there'd be a slight penalty to any checks you'd have to roll, at least until you picked up Ride (dire lion).

Ive got Ride (Horse) and since a Giant Lizard is considered fairly similar (dont ask, lol) I'd say that Dire Lion is just as similar. So I can use my Horse Ride skill at a -2 penalty.

polar bears are pretty mean as is ... and you want to make a dire version? (I think kodiak is actually a brown bear though)
