Okay my RPG history goes

1Started with Red Box Basic Set
2Tried and Hated 2e
3swtiched to GURPS - played lots of GURPS
4Switched to 3e because I liked the elegance of D20 and everyone else was doing 3e

So based on the fact that I think GURPS is a great system but that basic roll D20 is more elegant (and thus better) will I be better off

Sticking with 3e
Switching to 4e

Ps if it helps I liked SPycraft and M&M and my dream system would be D20 GURPS

Yes, GURPS 4E does rock - moreso than either 3E or 4E.

Honestly, though, I'd say 3E is closer to GURPS. I've thought for a while now that 3E is really the closest thing to a classless system you can get without going fully classless, largely because of the multiclassing rules. 4E emphasizes archetypes more strongly, though clever players can still get alot out of it. It can also be converted to fully classless quite easily. 3E is more legolike, though, and thus probably closer to the GURPS experience. But nothing beats the taste of the real thing.

Oh yeah. I just recent bought these and they look really cool. I haven't had time to read them all yet. I will be using GURPS 4E as the system for my next fantasy campaign, with some customization.

As a side derailment, does anyone who has played GURPS 4E think that ST is a little cheap (point cost wise) for low tech/fantasy settings? I remember testing with samples of different builds that high ST guys beat the snot out of everyone, mainly because you get HP with the ST.Has anyone else had similar experience (leaving out magic use)?

no problem - remember that ST is irrelevant for skills, defense, rolls to stay conscious/alive/etc.

BTW you might want to visit the SJG forums for lots of additional discussion of the DF series, including a collective setting ;)

I do not like Gurps. It is just a most generic toolbox build on the same design idea of D&D without classes. I already have problems with traditional D&D design but having classes is not one of them: on the contrary IMO classes are a needed design element for playing a group going on an adventure.

Yeah I have been meaning to ask this on the forums there. We built several gladiators of different styles on the same point totals and the high ST guy just always won every contest. I will see what the guys at the SJ forums have to say.

GURPS has more class optoins than D&D, is how I would look at it. Only they're called "templates" and you can exchange absolutely any element you want for something else.
