I've noticed this trend both among gamers and occasionally in the stray storhour: Halflings and Gnomes with LotR surnames. Exactly how common is it?

So, fess up, have you ever played a baggins, Brandyback, Took, Bracegirdle, Bulgar or Proudfoot?

Me, I've done two. One Took and one Proudfoot, both halfling fighter rogues.

The most recent among my players has been a gnomish Brandybuck (which for some reason is the most popular).

i played a halfling thief back in 1E days who was a Took. can't remember his first name.

what's a more appropriate name for a thief than Took? :p

My players use names that are obsene that rhyme with the Tolkein names. There is no respect for Halflings in my campaign.
