Okay, fess up...

We had a multi-year campaign end about a year ago and one of the NPC's was a hobbit with a quest fairly similar to Frodo's (though not nearly as epic). Can't remember the name, but it was very hobbit-esque. The campaign revolved around us trying to find him because he had basically been lost for some time and those that sent him out were worried about his task being 'completed'.

Though to our credit, this was RoleMaster with a dash of MERP, so I suppose we can get away with that :).

Sure, I've done it. I don't see anything wrong with it. Tolkien spent decades creating his world, I might as well avail myself of some of it.

Not saying there's anything wrong with it, just curious how widespread the practice is.

If we were going to talk about Tolkiens elvish names, then I'd be spitting out a fairly lengthy list...

Once, only once

Mr. Merle Thornton Underhill a Halfling Expert Shoemaker from a small town known as Hardbottle His Grandpap was a famous adventurer by the name of Perregryn Ikelsen Underhill ( I do believe), oh and to tie off the Irony He married the Daugther Of Baggins Greenbriar, Samanda Brandyback Greenbriar daughter of Esmilda Took ( Greenbriar by marriage)

But other than that one Tolkien infused Campaign never.

Though I prefer to play characters named

Flick, Shea, Par, or Brin ( As In Ohmsford) from the Shannara books. And I have also played a Menion Leah

Especially Shea ( I love the name) And I have played a Technomancer named Allanon once ( Who prefered to call himself a Druid)

Yes, yes I admit it

I have played a Halfling with the name Brandybuck

I have played Dwarves named Thorin, Gimli and Durin.

I have played Elves named Feanor and Finarfil.

Ok, I admit it. I love Tolkiens work. He has the greatest names.

I have always used plays on words for my character names. Sometimes it's close to a word. Sometimes it's a word backwards, Ydoolb Redrum was a dwarven fighter I had once. So I personally have never done this however I once ran a game with an Elvish prince named Elrond in it.

I once played, "Soriel Took - Hobbit Runemage Extrordinaire".

He is most famous for a gaff of mine in game where I said, "I'll look threateningly at the guards as I sit on the bed, polishing my rod."

Rod of Firebolts, that is. I'll never live that down.
