Okay .... So an Eldritch Giant Confessor is only a CR 20??

Regular Eldritch Giants have a CR of 15, not 13. So 11 cleric levels are considered non-associated and only up his CR by 5. I could see upping his CR to 21, but not any more than that.

Would ya look at that.....huh.

Still, CR 20 is close, I'd guess. Those 11 levels of cleric allows for buffs (that are easily dispelled) and heals (which is most of the time a lost action, given the PCs damage-dealing abilities.) It's worth a +5 bump to CR, given the HD, hp, feats, and saves, though.

Playtest, anyone? :D

I'll give it another shot as well, but I think many people are underestimating the power of high level characters. Now, if we are talking core books only, then *maybe* a CR 20 is warranted.

It looks like the stat block is a little off though, the confessor has a dex of 10 but they treat it as though it has the 12 dex that the normal giant has.

Looking it over the confessor has a lot more hit points, attack bonus, and skill ranks for its skills. It also has more combat options with certain feats. Most of its feats do not look like they would help most of the time, such as cleave and great cleave. The spells it has would mostly either not be useful at all or primarily outside of battle situations. The exception looks to be its single quickened divine favor spell. While its damage did not go up directly it has enough to hit that it could give up a lot for power attack.

The base creatures ability, such as a quickened 20th level greater dispel, look pretty rough to begin with though!

I do not know what the challenge rating should be though, just some observations.

Of course it's non-associated. Why wouldn't it, be, since those 11 levels only boost his size by one category, his strength by 10, fill in all of the missing BAB from his giant hit dice (and his cleric hit dice), boost his saves, give him DR, and some extra stackable bonuses to combat ability plus healing? (And no, it doesn't take that much time to prep, nor is it all that easy to dispel, if you put any serious thought into it.)

In my opinion, CR should be based on core, unless they have specific abilities that require non-core material to counter - which should be noted in the description. Otherwise challenge rating are an even less useful baseline than they already were. At least then you can compare to other creatures you've thrown at the party before.

Yeah, a level 20 spellcaster will have serious trouble dispelling a level 11 spellcasters buffs.

Give him the Practiced Spellcaster feat and a Bead of Karma and his caster level is 19. And that's just off the top of my head.

But this is a case where a "one size fits all" CR really isn't appropriate, since the giant's CR will be drastically different depending on whether or not he knows the PCs are coming and thus has time to buff. Another flaw in the CR system....
