Old edition "signature characters"

We all know Regdar, Mialee, Krusk, Lidda, etc.

But there were signature characters--of a sort, at least--in older editions as well. I remember Morgan Ironwolf appearing in several examples in Basic D&D. I recall a picture of Emiricol the Chaotic in the 1E DMG. It didn't say anything about him, but since he was named, where most of the pics weren't, I assume there was some substance to him. (If anyone knows what it was, or if he appeared elsewhere, I'd love to hear about it. It's a tangent to the main point of the threat, but what the heck. My thread, I can tangent if I want to.) ;)

So, what pseudo-signature characters can you think of from previous editions? To qualify, it has to be a character who:

A) Is named/identified in a core rulebook (PHB, DMG), or is named/identified in at least two separate non-core rulebooks.

B) Does not feature in any of TSR's novels of the time. (Yes, I know the current crop of sig characters have been in novels, but they were sig characters first.)

C) In most cases, the character should be used in/as an example of something rules-related, though exceptions are permitted (such as Emiricol) if you feel there's valid reason.

Have at. I'm curious. :)

Xylarthan he was the magic user in Determination of Abilities example in the Men & Magic booklet from the white box set.

He was an NPC in the first campaign I ever played it but our group ended up calling him Xylophone. A few years after we had last played in that campaign it was a great trivia question for our group, "What was Xylophone's real name?" :)

I agree Emirikol was very cool, based on that picture. I used him once in a one-shot scenario. He was a bard trying to break into a museum to steal a set of magical pipes.

From the Moldvay Basic set:
Morgan Ironwolf 1st level Fighter
Silverleaf 2nd level Elf
Fredrik 1st level Dwarf
Sister Rebecca 1st level Cleric
Black Dougal 2nd level Thief

From the Mentzer Basic Set:
Bargle the Magician

From the AD&D (1e) DMG:
Gutboy Barrelhouse, which is all I can remember, and I'm too lazy to look any more right now.

Rath was one of the example characters in the 2e PHB — had a 6 Cha or somesuch, IIRC. There was also a female sample character — name began with D, but I'm drawing a complete blank (Delsenora?).

Sounds right. Wonder if he actually opened a book to find that? Or is it just coincidence?

I dunno, but I've been very tempted to either play a character named Blackleaf, or even include one in one of my published books. :D
