Old Judges Guild products available at DTRPG

Greetings fellow old school gamers.

Tell me if I am losing my mind. I seem to remember Judges Guild puttiing out a book of blank hex sheets. The sheets had big hexes imposed in over the page to put everything with in it. The smaller hexes were numbered and there was a place at the top of the sheet to put a location for the hex or a name of the campaign setting. Does anyone other then me remember this book and if so where on gods green earth do I find that again?

Thanks in advance.

Could it be THIS?

I also seem to remember a product called the Campaign Hexagon System..ahhh yes..product number JG47..I don't believe it is on that website though...

Despite the unbridled enthusiasm throughout much of this thread, if you're not familiar with Judges Guild stuff, be warned: they put out some of the most awesome things back in the day, but they also put out a bunch of dreck. It was pretty hit-or-miss as I remember. Be careful and don't just order stuff expecting everything to be high quality.

For my opinions, I think Dark Tower and Caverns of Thracia were two of the best modules ever. Dark Tower was voted most favorite adventure by one of my old groups and I once tallied the old sheets I used to use when DMing and counted 150 PCs which went through at least part of the Caverns during the many times I DMed it. I also enjoyed DMing Portals of Torsh and playing in either Modron or Tegel Manor (or both - faulty memory, it was over two decades ago). The city states and wilderlands sourcebooks were good idea sources, but you had to examine each idea and toss the stuff that would destroy a campaign and build upon the cool ideas. Book of Treasure Maps was OK. Spies of Lightelf, Mines of Custalcon and Glory Hole Dwarven Mine I have no specific memories of, so they would be of suspect quality (I remember them, but don't remember running them, so perhaps they weren't very good, can't say for sure) to me.

Caverns should be available at GenCon and probably in stores in early September. This is, of course, barring any further strange problems (this one has had tons of problems). It is at the printer and should be ready. (snip)

Thanks, Patrick. I have been following the news of this... but this is becoming the T1-4 of 3.5E! ;)

Actually, I take that back. T1-4 was not only very, very late but a truly appalling module that highlighted too many of the fundamental weaknesses of 1E (and doesn't deserve the legendary status it holds notwithstanding the legendary status of the author): I know you NG guys will do a great job on the revised CoT... BUT HURRY UP!!!

Oh, and September probably means October for me here in Oz....

The old Campaign Hexagon System... http://judgesguild.com/pdf/campaignhexes.pdf

And, yes, that's a link to a free and legal copy of the same.

Enjoy!

Color me intrigued. Is there a website or message thread out there that details the history? I didn't know there was anything interesting here.

I think I saw it discussed on the Judges Guild section of the Necromancer Games forum. It was a very early thread asking what modules people would like to see adapted or reprinted (I forget which). When Tegel was mentioned, it was stated that it probably wouldn't see print because of the legal complications.

IIRC, there were a few issues. I think part of it had to do with a reprint. Someone was given the rights so they could do a Tegel reprint. There is dispute about exactly what rights were given (and how long). Also, I think either the contracts or other party disappeared (and maybe both), so tracking down details was supposed to be difficult.

Anyone have any more background on this?

IIRC, when Tegel came up on the NG boards, it was mentioned that some time in the past the rights to do a reprint were given to another company. That company then claimed they were given complete rights. Now the person who claims to have the rights is dead (I think) the new owners of the company only have his story to go on. You can go look in the Judges Guild forum for tegel manor under the reprinting section to get more info. I am working off of memory from the discussion some time ago.

Its a huge confusing mess that would almost guarantee a legal battle that would cost much more than any profits from a reprint would garner.

Might that one have complex IP ownership issues?

I believe (and I don't have much to back this up) that the Blackmoor IP has reverted back to Dave Arneson. He's very involved with the d20 Blackmoor project that is coming (or has come?) out this Summer and is giving out the Blackmoor Supplement as a free .pdf on his homepage.

Whether giving out a FFC .pdf for free would be a violation of IP rights or not, I don't know. But I can see how it might be considered bad form, and understand why Necro wouldn't make that .pdf available out of consideration for Goodman/Zeitgeist more than anything.
