On pain of death: marks vs. falling unconcious

Was DM'ing Kobold Hall (DMG adventure) last night and my PCs were up and down more times than a yo-yo during the last fight. This raised a question about marks.

Does a mark (say, by a Fighter) expire when the Fighter falls unconscious? It seems really unsporting to force the monster to attack the dying figher or take a -2 penalty to attacks -- the mark represents the challenge, the sense that if you let your guard down, you will suffer.

How about a Paladin's divine challenge? On the spot I ruled that the enemy had won the challenge by knocking you unconscious, since clearly his god was more powerful than yours, and he laughs in the face of your challenge. But RAW I can't find anything to support this. So you make an attack that doesn't include the dying paladin and now you suffer?

What about monsters that mark, like Kobold Dragonshields? If you kill one after it's marked you, it technically never has a next turn, so you're marked until something else marks you? Obviously that's not RAI...

Is there anything in RAW to clarify, else how would you rule as a DM?

I don't think there is anything in RAW, except it says monsters tend to not attack unconscious characters. I would simply say a character's marks expire when they fall unconscious.
