Can a wizard use a maximized Magic Missile into his Fifth level slot?

I know it belongs in the 4th level, but can he simply stuff it there, or must it be in the 4th?

I can't think of any official rules that say you can do something like this but I don't think it would break anything to allow someone to use 'higher' level spell slots for lower level spells.

PHB 148
Under CASTING A SPELL: Choosing a Spell: Spell Slots:

You always have the option to fill a higher-level spell slot with a lower-level spell.

The metamagic is not really related to the core issue in this case. The rules allow you to use a higher level spell slot than necessary to memorize a spell if you choose. I don't have a rules reference off hand, but I know sorcerors can use higher level spell slots to cast lower level spells, and I'm pretty sure wizards and clerics can do them the same thing when they prepare spells.

why not make a silenced-maximized magic missle? ... Then it's a 5th lvl spell.

or any other metamagic that only bumps the lvl up by +1.

ps: see the previous posts :)

He only has Maximize. It's a new one. Frankly, not that many good 2nd level spells to max.

Other than endurance, Cat's Grace, Bull Strength, Fox's Cunning, Flaming Sphere, or Melf's acid arrow. :p
