one-class characters through 20th?

A high-level character with a single class reminds me of "the good ol' days" when that's pretty much what you did with your human character (and more than a few demihumans). Without the ability to look around at each new level and smorgasbord the experience advancement, you really started to identify with that single class.

17th level fighter

I have seen a 15th level barbarian, and a 15th level wizard, and a 15th level cleric. But my story arcs ended and the campaign was over, so those players did not have the opportunity to go above 15th.

I rarely consider multiclassing. There are some combos that I would like to try (fighter/rogue, mainly), but usually, my characters are usually single-classed. I think I haven't picked up a single PrC yet, because I don't like how they are done, and I never could find one that fitted perfectly the concept I had in my head...

Multi-classing is the exception at my table. A couple of years ago in my original 3E campaign all of the characters (seven total) were single class to levels 20+ save one. Of my current crop of players (eight total), two thus far have multi-classed and they are sitting at level 11 or so right now.

I currently plan to go to L20+ as a single-class wizard with my current character (should be L14 once exp is handed out for the last session).

In my group's games, it's normal for people to have multiclassed before reaching L10, though (though usually into a prestige class).

My favourite characters are arcane spellcasters. That said, I have little reason to either stay single class or multiclass (to core classes), and I instead end up choosing one prestige class instead :uhoh: So that IIRC has kept me single-classed up to level 6-7 at most, depending on how many levels I needed before qualifying for the PrCl.

I have seen single-classed characters up to level 12-13 IIRC, at least one Monk, one Ranger (3.0!) and one Fighter. Except the Monk, these are not very good choices to be single-class, but both players basically were not the min-maxing type and so didn't care for PrCl/multiclassing advantages.

As a very general thing in D&D, I really wish that ALL core classes offered good reasons to stay single-class up to level 20 exactly, so that taking a PrCl or multiclass were equal options to single class, but that's not the truth currently.

I very rarely start a character single-classed, much less leave one that way.

Games I run tend to use the Gestalt rules, so there's either total multiclassing, or very little multiclassing, depending on how you want to look at it. (But Prestige Classes seem to be popular at my table.)

When I make multiclassed characters, they're multiclassed from start (using the old 1st-level multiclass character if needs be) and do not deviate from that path.

I've only one character that stayed single-classed to the end (a wizard 7), but that's because the campaign was abruptly stopped before she could become the loremaster she wanted to be (had all the prereqs, just needed the XP now for her first loremaster level).

However, my next character will be a single-classed Warmage up to the end -- not aiming for any PrC.
