one-class characters through 20th?

I currently play an 11th level sorcerer. While constantly toying with the idea of a prestige class, I really am most happy just going straight sorcerer, and will likely stay that way.

Most of my previous characters have been multi-classed, at least taking a 1 level dip in something to round out the character. I am very happy with the options opened up by the multiclass rules of 3e, and for the first couple of years playing 3e all of my characters took advantage of them.

With the newer feat options in Complete Warrior and some of the other supplements, I am tempted to play a single-classed fighter, but without caster levels to worry about I may get tempted to take the one-level dip at some point.

Multi-classing is the exception at my table. A couple of years ago in my original 3E campaign all of the characters (seven total) were single class to levels 20+ save one. Of my current crop of players (eight total), two thus far have multi-classed and they are sitting at level 11 or so right now.
While I lean towards single class, multiclass in the rule for most of the tables I've been at throughout the different editions of DnD. In the current incarnation, it seems that few can resist the tempations of PrCs.

Unfortunately, the tempation is for one-trick pony PrCs that offer a certain combat combo instead of flavor.

My 3-PC party has a Ranger 11 and a Cleric (Pelor; Healing and Sun) 11, both humans. The other character is a half-elf Wizard 5/Rogue 3/Battledancer 3.

I took a rogue into epic levels with some zippy XP advancement.

My other characters have never been played long enough, but most would either take the base class to 20th or take a base class and 10 levels of one prestige.

My players typically stick with one class. My last major campaign (that ran 1st-22nd or so) had a single classed sorcerer, rogue, paladin, and monk.

and currently the only single classed PC.

the 11th lvl ranger (archer version) died
the 10th lvl druid left.

but i think this had to do with starting the PCs at level 4. much easier to twink at above level 1.

the rest of the party currently:

deep halfling bard 9/ arcane archer 2
dwarf ranger 1/ monk 4/ fighter 2/ justiciar 4
human rogue 7/ fighter 4
human fighter 2/ cleric 6/ morninglord of lathander 3
halfling (kender version) rogue 4/ twf ranger 6/ dragonhunter 2
NPC deep gnome kukri twf ranger/ guide

even the old pcs that split earlier in the campaign:

human monk 4/ sorcerer 2 (monk of the Old Order)
human fighter 4/ cleric 1 (heading to hunter of the dead whip master) Angelsboi's PC

I usually multi-class but I've always wanted to play a single-class druid.

In the campaign I was in that just ended, there was a cleric 17 and a monk 16 I think. I've also started running the Dungeon Adventure Path and we have a single-class wizard, cleric, and ranger so far.

I actually find it refreshing that some players don't feel a need to immediately run to the newest book o' crunch and start planning. But if that's what they want to do, I don't mind as long as their character doesn't get out of hand compared to the rest of the group.

I think maybe the rest of the group also influences a player's choice to multiclass? If everyone else is on the single-class fasttrack, for example, the single player might not want to risk losing class "power" by comparison (i.e. lost spell levels, or dips in BAB). On the other hand, if everyone else is branching out, then he's got nothing to lose by doing the same.

As for the so-called "prestige" factor: In my mind, there's a certain sort of prestige associated with becoming the top-tier icon of a single class.

I always, always, always multiclass.

Rog 4, Ftr 2, Rgr 1, Mnk 1, Mge 1, at the moment. I'm taking another level of Mage and running with 2 5 level PrC's. Magic classes while taking combat feats. Hoody hoo.
