I currently play an 11th level sorcerer. While constantly toying with the idea of a prestige class, I really am most happy just going straight sorcerer, and will likely stay that way.
Most of my previous characters have been multi-classed, at least taking a 1 level dip in something to round out the character. I am very happy with the options opened up by the multiclass rules of 3e, and for the first couple of years playing 3e all of my characters took advantage of them.
With the newer feat options in Complete Warrior and some of the other supplements, I am tempted to play a single-classed fighter, but without caster levels to worry about I may get tempted to take the one-level dip at some point.
