One game session inglorious game/campaign failures

My first time ever playing D&D.

I was in maybe sixth or seventh grade. My friend had bought the game (AD&D) and wanted to try it out. I was the only player, and he made me make up six (!) characters to play. Then the clincher: he wanted me to role play buying the starting equipment.

Some further backgroud:
- I had never heard of D&D.
- I had no concept of what a role-playing game was.
- I had not much familiarity with the whole sword & sorcery genre.
- Therefore, I had no idea what to expect, no idea what kind of equipment I would need, and no clue as to what options were available.

And, as a tween, I had no patience & wanted to jump right in to playing something more interesting than a shopping spree. In short order, I was teleported to an orc fortress (with no idea what an "orc" was), and about ten minutes later, five out of six characters were dead with the sixth barely escaping with one eye skewered after peeking through an arrow slit. (I was really, REALLY clueless; I didn't even grok what an arrow slit was.)

The upshot was, we didn't try it again until we talked my brother and some other friends into playing. We never had to roleplay starting equipment again, and for a while all my characters were the same race/class as the one who managed to get away.
