One Level Scale to Rule Them All?

I can't believe this. You people should be OUTRAGED at spell levels going to 25th. That just makes things MORE complicated and it's destroying what D&D once was:

"Uh was that a 14th-level...or 16th-level spell? Maybe it was 19th?"

Let's see what's SIMPLER:

1st-25th level

or

1st-9th level
Above 9th-level is Epic

Hmmm...doesn't take a genius to figure this out.

They've destroyed another sacred cow of D&D. How much more is being destroyed in our beloved game? You guys are just gonna let this roll over? At this rate, D&D won't be recognizable AT ALL!

But maybe that's what you folks want? D&D but...it's no longer D&D. Come May 2008...D&D is dead. And we're half the reason it's going to die because we blindly follow whatever WotC says. A shame what the generation of gamers has turned into all of a sudden.

This 4E crap just sickens me each time I hear something new. I really hope this edition runs them to the ground.

You seem to be taking care of that pretty well. It takes the pressure off the rest of us 3.x grognards.

Yup. If you can count to nine, you can probably also count to twenty-five. That makes both systems about equivalently easy, especially if the spell level corresponds to caster level or character level (or even dungeon level :p ) in some fashion.

You're right. The game in which fighters, wizards, clerics, and rogues go into dungeons and attack trolls and dragons by rolling twenty-sided dice will be completely different. Oh wait...

You know, I'm not exactly thrilled about the release of a 4th edition only 4 years after the last one. However, I do intend to give the damn thing a chance to demonstrate that the changes they've made are for the better, and will make a better gaming experience. Until I've actually played it, I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt. I'm pretty heavily invested in 3.5, and I have no intention of dropping it, even if I do also start playing 4th edition. However, I'm not going to howl about how the world's coming to an end just because they've decided to make some changes in the new edition. What did you expect, that the new edition would be just like the old one?

Yeah, because that'll make everything better.

Razz, Doc, let's reduce the rhetorical claws. I can understand the feelings running high, but let's not let it get personal. Thanks.

But if its fireball is a 3rd level spell, horrid wilting is a 16th level spell I will tear my hair out. Oh god the complexity!!:)

Why is "Fireball is 3rd, Horrid Wilting is 16th" all that much harder than "Fireball is 3rd, Horrid Wilting is 8th"?

Er ok.

Is spells to level 25 really what they said or did they say there would be at least level 25 spells. IF so this makes me think that spells will be equivalent to class level which makes more sense.

Honestly if you dont like it don't even click on the 4th edition sub section. You should open your mind too it. I laughed everytime I passed that wotc booth. But once i talked to a designer, had dinner with some wotc people and actually read some of the factual stuff it sounded like something icould at least open up to.

I haven't met too many people who didn't like the changes. The one thing you can say is at least its a new game.

I don't have the exact quotes handy but designers in either message board threads or their blogs said something like "powers are now named after the levels at which you get them" and "we don't want people at high levels having 80 different abilities to choose from".

So, here's my theory about this:

-You gain spells in much the same way that Warblades get maneuvers. (You have so many maneuvers total allowed to you and you have so many maneuvers known)

-There are 30 levels of spells, but you may only prepare, say, 10 spells at a time.

-As you go up levels the number you can have prepared at any one time increases only slightly.

-You can swap your lower level spells for higher level ones as you gain levels.
