D&D 5E One Shot #3: Lady of the Mist

Mister Bubbles grins tightly as he sees Ryder getting his charms out for the villagers. The half-orc knows that such a man is a powerful ally, able to turn foes into friends, at least for a moment. He himself has used the technique, although it often takes a bit of magic for others to really trust him.

This way is better. Letting the guy do his thing, Mister Bubbles follows silently to the tap room, making sure his naturally intimidating presence does not create too big a distraction.

"Hello, we've been trying to catch up to a friend of ours. We heard he was traveling this way, maybe a day or two ago. Have you seen him?" Lee asks.

The man's smile turns into a frown as he looks the party over. "You don't look like your from Thirsk, any of you." he says rubbing his bearded chin. "And I know the man your talking about, and you don't look like friends of his either. But if you are, then you can shove off and go about your own business, we want no trouble here."

Ivar shades his eyes as best he can, but the glare of the water catches him in them and he has to shut them tight a moment to remove the spots from them. This allows his ears to perk up a bit and he catches the sound of music on the wind. It seems to be coming from the water.

“Oh trouble is the absolute last thing we need, as well, Goodman,” Ryder says. “My associate may have been a trite hasty when calling this man a friend. It is true we have business with him, but if you know where he is, believe me when I say that directing us to him is the path of least trouble, for all involved. It means we don’t have to keep searching, and you won’t have more people asking more annoying questions!”

Bilkar shifts uncomfortably from foot to foot, uncomfortable with the humans he looks around for animals to talk to. Seeing a bird circling the shore looking for fish he peps up a little, then slumps back down almost as quick as if he realized that now might not be the best time to draw attention by talking to birds.

Remaining silent for now. Bilkar tries to stay out of the way, Ryder seems capable of handling this his way far better than Bilkar could.

Round 0

Ivar closed his eyes. Bloody sunlight. He tilted his head, listening. He heard music coming from down by the water. The duergar glanced at the others. He didn’t want to interrupt Ryder’s charm offensive. The old fisherman didn’t seem to buy it too much. If he was talking about Escandor, it didn’t seem the man was too popular in these parts.

Ivar spotted the gnome looking around. He reached over and gave Bilkar a shake on the shoulder and then, with a jerk of his head, silently told him to follow. Then Ivar turned his pony toward the lake, following the sounds of the music.

Mister Bubbles watches the exchange between Ryder and the village elder, studying his companion's mannerisms and words to learn how to be better at influencing others. Realizing the elder might not be as cooperative as he first imagined, the half-orc starts looking around for other villagers whom the warlock can persuade to tell them more, in case Ryder is unsuccessful with the old man.

Then he notices the dwarf and the gnome sneaking off towards the lake. How curious! Torn for a moment, Mister Bubbles decides to stay where he is at the moment, watching Ivar and Bilkar from a distance.

Bilkar nods, leans forward and whispers into Colts ear, quietly in his own language asking the young pony to follow Ivar.
As they move to the water Bilkar holds his hand out palm up, muttering to himself and moving his other hand over his palm. A small shinning globe appears for a moment before he snuffs it out by closing his hands. No storms coming for a while. This is a good sign.

He looks around again as he follows Ivar, seeing a young boy struggling to get a cook fire lit. With a smile Bilkar mutters again and rubs his hands together to warm them then blows softly into his palms and watches as the boys excitement rises as flame starts to rise from the twigs.

Happy with himself. Bilkar turns his attention back to Ivar and pets Colt.

A woman sitting near the fire turns her head as if she has just caught the sounds of the music on the air. She stands and dusts off her hands. "Nidar," she calls loudly to the old man talking to the group. "She's playing." she adds in a more somber tone of voice.

The old man pauses and listens a moment. Then nods sagely. Turning to the group his expression has turned sad, and he says in a solemn voice. "It doesn't matter now what business you were about. Your friend is most likely dead now. The Lady is playing, come listen and after I'll tell you all I can."

Walking towards the lake the group watches as all the villagers stop in their work and the children stop running about. Everyone is looking out onto the water at the horizon created by the lake and sky. As you near the edge of the beach you catch a melody that grows louder the closer you are to the water.
