D&D 5E One-shot kills

I just had one a week or so ago in CoS with my 2nd level fighter fighting the shambling mound. First hit did enough to drop me to only a few hp, second attack was a crit and killed me outright. I haven't seen it past level 2 or 3 though. And I don't think I will.

In Lost Mines of Phandelver, my wizard (level1) who climbed up the chimney to check out the room above (not very stealthfully I might add) was surprised by the Bugbear baddie who would have smashed me with a 1 shot kill, but I let go of the walls and used shield to protect myself. Unfortunately, I tumbled down the shoot and took some damage, but I was still alive.

Later in the adventure, we went around the other way and our fighter faced the Bugbear. The Bugbear scored a crit and that fighter crumpled down into a gory mess - instant death. The player loved it. He ended up making a new character and was a great sport. It was awesome to feel vulnerable.

Right now, the campaign I'm DMing, I'm really scared for my PCs. They have gotten themselves in a pickle. In PoTA, they just encountered Windharrow and Queen Aerisi. They were getting along well diplomatically, but then one of the PCs tried to take the horn from the Queen's throne room. (Granted, I did give that PC a back story that told him the horn was a holy relic of his Air Genasi clan so he needed to get it back). When the PC didn't give the horn back, the Queen ordered her minions to get it back. Then she and Windharrow escaped. If the Queen used her lightning bolt or her chain lightning, there would have been massive death. The party managed to withstand the battle with the minions, which included an invisible stalker.

We ended the last session there. Now, they are about to walk into an ambush in the grand hall below. I will have Windharrow parlay with them, but if the PCs don't do what he says, there may be a blood bath. I like it.

Surprising Bugbear crit versus level 1 PC. 32 damage does it.

Stone Giant crit versus a 6th level wizard. Wizard had 12 con and default hps of 32. Crit was for 66 damage.

Most common: One hit that pushes off a cliff and does very high falling damage. A few falling deaths so far... maybe 4?

Oh, yeah..Giants. I forgot about them.

In one of our Hoard of the Dragon Queen sessions, we were only 3rd level I think (maybe 4th) and we were chased by a hill giant that threw rocks at us. The Eldritch Knight in our group, was targeted and would have been hit twice, but he used all of his shield spells to escape...a crit on those would have been pretty bad since the Eldritch Knight was already close to 0 hp.

I think individual character death happens more when the party doesn't simply insist on having a TPK.

If a character drops, sometimes you need to leave them behind.

One shot kills are rare, but they happen. Actually, a few sessions back, one of the pcs in my game looked a bodak in the eye and died. (It was one of those "fail a save and you fall over and lose some hps, but if you fail by 5 or more, you die" things.) He could brought back by a Revivify spell, but it was pretty shocking and led to a very tense fight that came close to tpking the group.

Well I one-shot killed a PC today, a 5th level Bard, but it was a 9th level slot casting of Phantasmal Killer (WIS save DC 19 or 9d10 Psychic damage, repeat until save - but he died from the first tranche) from Runelord Sorshen in my conversion of Paizo's 'Shattered Star: Curse of the Lady's Light', and this is basically what is supposed to happen. :D

This happened just a couple weeks ago. The PCs were all 7th level except for a 4th level SorLock. The party are attacked in the Air Temple (PotA) and take several lightning bolts from the cultists, everyone making their saves. The SorLock was hit for about 12 points due to his save and throws up his arms and taunts the opponents...

...Then the young blue dragon flies around the pyramid and breathes on him. 55 points of lightning damage leaves one crispy gnome in its wake. (He blew his save, then blew the reroll from a hero point.)

We've been playing 5E since the starter set came out and this was the first autokill we've had.
