One Stinky Ball of Ice

First Post
So I'm planning the next combat, the climactic fight between a high powered wizard vs. the party.

One idea I had was having the hasted wizard cast Stinking Cloud at the flying mage, then cast a spherical Wall of Ice around him.

Here's my question: What happens?

The spell says that if the individual doesn't make the fort save, they can do nothing but move. If he's trapped in the ball of Stinking ice, what does he do? Can he not get out? Break the ice?

Also, just as important, what happens after the sphere of ice is cast in the air? Does it just Fall out of the air? How much does it weigh (Would the flying wizard keep it in the air since it would be weighted on him)?

If you did allow a sphere, with the same radius as the hemisphere, the weight (by caster level) would be :

7: 39690.3999 lbs
8: 54759.08937 lbs
9: 73172.26196 lbs
10: 95261.52598 lbs
11: 121358.4898 lbs
12: 151794.7617 lbs
13: 186901.9502 lbs
14: 227011.6634 lbs
15: 272455.5097 lbs
16: 323565.0976 lbs
17: 380672.0353 lbs
18: 444107.9311 lbs
19: 514204.3934 lbs
20: 591293.0306 lbs

Well, approximately.

So for a medium-sized wizard, to carry the CL7 sphere aloft, he'd need a Strength of about 54, I think. The CL20 would need Str 66.

Okay, let's assume we then have a hemisphere of Ice. Same scenario.

Could they attack the ice wall? Or are they still under the 'can't do anything but move' situation?

If so, then they need to have someone OUTSIDE help them.

If the player gets trapped, then, yes, he'll have to get some outside help until the cloud wears off (10-13 rounds for a 7th level caster). In order to get trapped and be virtually helpless, he'd have to fail a reflex save and a fortitude save, tho...

Its a cool tactic, but there are probably more effective methods of getting rid of the pesky mage, especially if the attacker is a high level wizard...

btw Hypersmurf, what's the density of ice (I only have a metric value) you used to calculate those masses?

(edited because the first time, it didn't make much sense)

Density of ice is 0.92 that of water. Water is 62.42 pounds per cubic foot, and ice is 57.43. (I'm a metric person too, so I had to convert :) )

Useful link.

Well, Acid fog + Wall of Ice may work, but the acid would eat the ice up, and you can't catch a lot of things in the ice hemisphere, so... :)

I'm working with a 14th level wizard here, out in the open. He would be prepped to fight anything that came after him (The whole forest full of nasties wants his head). So hes' going to be pretty Combat Ready.

I didnt realize a cubic pound of ice weighed that much...

A cubic pound?? (Which weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of lead? :) )

A cubic foot, surely? :)

But even so, it's less than what a cubic foot of water weighs.
