D&D 5E (2024) One Store's Sales (D&D 2014 & 2024)

Eyeballing the data it seems like for recent releases (so 5.5e and tail end of 5e) you tend to sell way more of the Exclusive / Alternate covers, while for the earlier 5e releases it doesn't seem to follow this trend as much

I'm wondering if that indicates DnD Beyond direct orders starting to dominate the market of players who just want the product at the cheapest price available, while collectors who are more willing to spend extra money preferring to support a local game store over WotC.
One of the more interesting things to me about these numbers is that we know now that Beyond sales account for 67% of D&D revenue...ao I think it is fairly safe to assume that some number of Vancouverians (apologies to all if that is incorrect) who bought from @FitzTheRuke before probably bought from WotC directtly.

This is 5.14 & 5.24 combined.

My apologies, I am not a data scientist or IT professional. Just watching TV with family and thinking about D&D.

Part of the problem is that the exclusive covers started later. Also I don’t think every book has them originally but I might be remembering wrong.

Volo's was the first they did at all, and 2019 was the first year they did more than one, with at least Saltmarsh, Eberron, and Avernus. Before that it was one a year, strictly.

Settings and adventures are considered two different categories. But I dont see salient difference between them. For example the Forgotten Realms setting is a book of player options (crunch) plus a book of adventures.

Essentially, an "adventure" is a local setting. A setting may or may not add new player options.

World settings: Oerth, Toril, Eberron, Athas, Astral Sea ...
Regional settings: West Faerun, Kara-Tur, Theros, Outlands ...
Local settings: Blackmoor, Greyhawk, Balders Gate, Menzoberranzan, Phandelver, Sigil, Strixhaven, ...
