Well, Liu did turn his back on his village and religion and left during his training and did redeem himself by confronting his fears and overcoming them.

It is nothing like that. The main character leaves his village to reclaim the stolen head of their Buddha, Ong-bak. He finds himself in a situation where he must fight in order to get it.

Trust me, it's absolutely nothing like MK.

I've only seen about five minutes of the movie, a fight scene in a bar. It didn't look bad, but it also didn't wow me. It's nice to see people doing real kicks and real strikes, but a) if everyone in the movie is conveniently wearing enormous padded wigs or bulky padded jackets, the "Full Contact!!!!!!eleven" claim doesn't really mean much. I could have a decent looking martial arts movie too, if we ran around in fat suits the whole time.

And in the five minute section I watched, the hero did approximately two moves. He did them well, mind you, and maybe the five minute section I watched wasn't representative of the whole movie in terms of fighting style or amount-of-padding, but what I saw looked silly.
