If you're in college, you qualify for academic pricing for Microsoft (and other vendor) products. Check your bookstore, they're real cheap.
I picked up Visual Studio for $99 in place of over $1000 since I'm a student. Other vendors have academic pricing as well, I got Acrobat for about $40, if I recall.
