Only one week left -- EN World fantasy baseball leagues forming

Shadowdancer

First Post
I've created two fantasy baseball leagues on Yahoo.

They are free.

One uses roto scoring, the other is head to head. You can join which appeals to you, or both. In order to join both, however, you must have two Yahoo accounts. But they are free.

To join the roto league:

League name is EN World Roto League.
League number is 4404.
League password is rotoleague.

To join the head to head league:

League name is EN World Head to Head League.
League number is 4828.
League password is headtoheadleague.

Both will use auto drafts. Draft will be set once the leagues fill up (or a week before the season starts). The roto league will have a maximum of 14 teams. The head to head league will have a maximum of 20 teams.

Let's play ball!

Cool. Signed up for both (Kajamba Leprechauns, Wampanoag Lions). Two things: (1) You don't need two Yahoo! accounts to sign up for both, and (2) how come there're so many RP slots in the roto league (any chance some of those could be converted to P slots)? Just curious.

I was trying to set up the roto teams to be pretty close to actual major league teams. Most major league teams have a pitching staff of 10 -- 5 starters, 5 relievers. But I think you will find that many pitchers qualify for both SP and RP.

Fair enough. :) I know lots of pitchers qualify for both, but it's still a lot of RP slots to fill. I hate to be the guy asking all the questions, but I also was wondering how you decided to pick the stats for scoring.

The scoring categories are a mixture, derived from several years of participating in many different fantasy baseball leagues. Some are the traditional categories most leagues use (runs, rbis, home runs, wins, era, whip, etc.) Some are what I call negative categories which sort of balance the traditional categories out, such as errors, strikeouts and caught stealing for batters, and walks and losses for pitchers; I feel you need to take the bad with the good when it comes to picking your players.

Then some of the categories are to give value to players which aren't home run hitters on offense or flame-throwing starting pitchers. Total bases, for example, gives value to speedy players who don't hit home runs. So they can help your team in more categories than just stolen bases. Total outs and holds are ways for relief pitchers who aren't closers to have value for your team -- although I'm not totally convinced on the validity of holds as a stats category for real baseball, I think it's OK for fantasy baseball.

I prefer on-base percentage to batting average because it's a more accurate reflection of a player's ultimate value. You can get on base several ways without getting a base hit. The most important thing in baseball when you are on offense is to score a run. You can't score a run without getting on base -- unless you hit it over the fence every time up, and even then the player gets statistical credit for being on base.
