I was a little concerned when I heard people saying how "gaudy" and "busy" the cover was, but having now seen it it's not that bad. Hell of a lot better than the cheesy art on some of the old 2e books.
I met the gentleman who designed the covers for the three core rule books while waiting for a taxi from GTS to the airport yesterday. In fact, he was holding a big blow-up of the new PH cover with him! His name is Henry Higgenbotham and seemed like a real nice fellow.
Why can't they make plain, sober covers ? Without cheesy art (will, without Easley art anyway; they could use all the Swekel art they want) ? And without all these gaudy fake gems ? Seriously, it's kitsch. It is possible to make beautiful covers. Look at Nobilis, for example. Ah, well.
I'd love to see the covers done without the faux metal and glass bits. The colours and the textures are nice, and would be even better on their own. The book title (preferably in a better font) centred in the top half of the cover (nicely embossed would be a bonus), and bam, nice attractive book with a cover that doesn't feel so stale so quickly.
