12? quasi elements? I play in a game with 5 as per the chinese beliefs.
It's sort of a complicated story and I am not sure when I first came up with it, but all of my campaigns have been based on 12 elements. Although they changed a bit troughout.
In no particular order:
Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Wood, Metal, Lightning, Ice, Shadow, Spirit, Light and Darkness
In the oldest version I can remember there was once Light and Darkness, both created out of the prime chaotic energies. Light and Darkness then out of boredom, or because of arguments (differs per story) created either the elements Fire, Water, Earth and Air or they created Fire, Ice, Earth and Air. These elements then later mixed up and formed the elements Wood (called Plants or Nature in some versions), Metal, Lightning and Ice (or Water), and later Light and Darkness mixed in the evershifting Shadow (called Moon in some versions) and Spirit elements.
Shadow and Spirit were always opposed to each other but never on either the side of Light or Darkness which were good and evil.
Fire, Water, Earth and Air also were either good and evil and the mixtures were also good and evil, which always was a bit icky since it ended up with Good * Good = Good / Evil * Evil = Good (basically like -1 * -1 = 1).
Fire was good if opposed by Ice and evil when opposed by water. Earth was good and Air evil.
Fire * Earth = Metal (evil)
Fire * Air = Lightning (originally evil when fire was good, but later good when fire became evil)
Water * Earth = Wood (good)
Water * Air = Ice (evil)
I don't think I ever came up with the formulas for when Ice was primary.
So this left us with the Good side:
Earth, Water, Wood, Lightning, Light and either Spirit or Shadow.
And the Evil side:
Air, Fire, Metal, Ice, Darkness and either Spirit or Shadow.
However, in the current version I am trying to make all elements equal in power (so no paraelements) and mostly neutral. I am thinking of matching Spirit to the Positive Energy Plane making it good-aligned and Shadow to the Negative Energy Plane (not the shadow plane, which I'm probably gonna rename) making it evil-aligned. And Light and Darkness will probably be LG and CE or possible CG and CE depending on if I decide if they should be truly opposing or share a chaotic nature. The well-known 4 elements should be Neutral but I haven't decided for the remaining 4.
EDIT: Probably makes more sense to line up shadow with shadow, spirit with ethereal, light with positive energy and darkness with negative energy.
All my campaigns are essentially in the past or future relative to each other but in sort of the same plane. At one time I had a campaign in which one of the deities actually was a PC from a former campaign which ascended to divinity after the campaign ended. The funny part was that without the PCs knowing that the player that used to play that deity's mortal version seemed to worship that deity's daughter.
Sorry for rambling on like that, didn't mean to hijack the thread.
