I found that a curious thing until I remembered something else. I know captchas are being used to help digitize old documents now, so I wouldn't be surprised if the autofail version helps to determine what the actual thing says. After several trials yield sufficient statistics to indicate it has probably been accurately translated it can go into rotation as a proper captcha (while further improving the statistics). Not saying your hate isn't righteous, but there might be a method to the madness.

It's been a while since I used the forum that had it, but all I remember is you enter in the captcha and password, it tells you it was incorrect and lets you try again (new captcha), and every single time, I used the same password as the initial attempt and got in. I don't know if it was the password or captcha set to autofail (and I'm quite certain I wasn't just getting the captcha wrong the first try and right the second every single time) or why the hell someone would make a system so evil, all I know is I experienced it and boy did it piss me off.

Oh I know there are captchas out there that are about helping to digitize old written records, but that does little to mollify my feeling over them. They irritate me because they are often damn near illegible and that's even without intentional distortions to further confuse bots. I do not enjoy jumping through captcha hoops several times because I can't read the damn things in the first place. Even more annoying are captchas which feature characters that are not normally present on an American keyboard. I usually just reload those things, I'm not about to go crawling through the Character Map for that. At least those are somewhat rare.
