Because they're, like, 1st level Hobgoblin warriors. Too low a level to be a challange.

Yes, but I was under the impression that the challenge rating of an encounter increases by two for every doubling of the number of foes present. Although it would be unreasonable to say that the whole battle is an encounter (wow, I would love to get that amount of XP!), I think the hobgoblins that Belkar fought in this strip should all count.

Nonono, the EL (Encounter Level) increases, but the XP is based of the CR, and the CR remains too low to give you XP - the Belkster can only hope for RP-XP! :D

Hmm, I am not sure I understand how the XP system works then. I guess this is a function of the fact that I don't use it --> I just tell my PCs that they level whenever I feel like they should and all level at the same rate. With other groups it may cause problems with item creation and so on, but my group would never give up a single XP for any purpose, so it is not an issue.

Bwah?!? You honestly think that you get the same XP if you fight six hobgoblins at once as you would if you fight them one at a time, with a good night's rest in between?

That's not how the XP section of my DMG has it. Not at all.
