I think he'll avoid M's Disjunction. The gate is likely an artifact. Having a chance of losing all spellcasting ability is not cool. He is a sorceror, so he's got limited spells to work with. I'd be surprised if he has multiple AoE spells for each level. At least not multiples of the same save type. My best guess is a horizontal gate into some hostile plane, 20 ft diameter, under the paladins. No save. Gbye.

For some reason I think "have some fun" doesn't mean a direct attack on the throne room. Maybe some villainous taunting, or a hit and fade, or... I dunno, something else.

I could be wrong, though.

Man, not one blunt weapon in the house. Xykon has a slight advantage there. Plus so few of them have flight. But hell, maybe the paladins can pull an upset and knock him back into redcloak's amulet.
Overland Flight's pretty awkward once you get indoors. No hovering (so no full-round spells, and thus no metamagic for sorcerer Xykon), and fairly poor manoueverability.

And there may not be any bludgeoning weapons, but there are a fair few shields. A few Greater Magic Weapon spells, plus some paladins with Improved Shield Bash, could provide Xykon with a nasty surprise.

Therefore Xykon must be thwarted in some way.

Because if he isn't, then there will be no opportunity for the middle window to be boarded up and for someone to make a comic *CEESH* intrance into the throne room via the last available window.

Unless Xykon is soon thwarted by someone who enters via the last window pane fairly soon, though I can't imagine who that'd be...

I'm betting that last window will be Xykon's exit route! ;)

Wait.

What gate?

I don't care how high-level Xykon is. He's still a Sorcerer and he's ina room with 20+ mid- to high-level Paladins.

He either gets trounced back into the phylactery or Xykon becomes a DMPC.

I think they're all low to mid level. I see him taking greater invisibility or time stop out, and then just demolishing them. He's epic; they're mid-level at best.

Hinjo specifically told his second-in-command to defend the Throne Room. This is what the Sapphire Guard was created to do. Just because the OotS is at about 13th level (judging by V's and Durkon's spells) doesn't mean the rest of the world conforms to that. Miko was apparently a couple of levels above them, and Hinjo himself could be 14th level and still be the Guard's second-best Paladin (after Miko). So why can't there be 10th-12th level Paladins in that room? Specifically, Paladins who ARE expecting an attack, and KNOW who is attacking them. They'd be not only foolish, but poorly-written, if they don't have precautions, buffs, spells and whatnot tailored for Xykon (and it's a no-brainer that between them, more that 10 NPCs will have enough ranks in Knowledge [religion] to know everything there is to know about the lich template... heck, they probably have the MM right there! :D ).

Okay, if they're 10th-12th level, they're mid-level. You agree that they can't be much higher, right? Hence my statement, "mid-level at best." :D

At the least, Xykon is ECL 22, and more likely ECL 24. Does someone want to count up the paladins/guardians and see what that encounter comes out to?

Of course, Xykon slaughtering the Sapphire Guard to the last is the most likely scenario. There's a reason for that, which Elan could explain very well -- drama demands that it's the PCs who triumph over the BBEG, not a bunch of NPCs.
