OotS 498 is up

I think it would be a lot more interesting if we didn't go back and follow the rest of the Order through Roy's "missing time." I think it'd be cool if we either

A) Pick them up now, and learn what's been happening through conversation and extrapolation from current events, or

B) Follow Roy as he finds some other way to get back, and only learn what happened to the party when he himself joins back up with them and finds out.
Actually, I'm assuming that's one of the reasons why Rich did this. He can jump forward in the story and fill in backstory as and when needed, in all likelihood surprising and amusing readers as he does so.

I think a great part of the joke here is that Rich is 'hanging a lampshade' on the fact that he had to let the comic lapse for a while.

If you have no idea what I mean by that, search for 'lampshade' on www.tvtropes.org

That's what I assume myself: the party hasn't been reunited, and Haley and Belkar are still lugging Roy's (increasingly decayed) corpse around, looking for both a cleric and a diamond to cast True Resurrection on Roy to bring him back.

Looks like we're going to get a time skip by the time Roy comes back to the land of the living.
Or it could be like when Elan escaped from Cliffport and we get a flashback.

Oh, and Roy's Grandfather offering to teach him some uber-Fighter feats? Sounds like Eugene Greenhilt was wrong when he said Roy wouldn't be able to learn from some great master that lives in the afterlife :)

If I ever play Shadowrun or d20 Modern, I'll yoink this somehow.

Yes. Each day a corpse spends under the protection of gentle repose doesn't count for this purpose, so a corpse with a permanent gentle repose cast on it (whether permanency works for gentle repose is left to DM's fiat) could be revived with raise dead even three millennia later.
Good going.

There's also Oil of Timelessness.

Or maybe Roy's player liked his new paladin too much to go back playing a straight fighter?
Now that would be a hilarious twist. Roy discovers that someone has taken his place in the party, although I would not go with a Paladin. Have Roy's player get tired of playing a LG character, so he plays something darker instead.

Pretty good storytelling move there. Great strip.

I rather like how Roy and his grandfather are bonding so well and filling the gaps left by their respective problems with Eugene Greenhilt through that bond.

But, err, what is the time limit of Raise dead anyway? Any risk of Roy needing something stronger?

Argh, now the question of "what has been happening in the living world" is bugging me. Why no resurrection? What has the OotS been up to? Who is leading the party? Is there even a party anymore? Are the all split up and alone now? The hero coming back and gathering the former members of a group together again is a great classic plot... Did everyone else level up?

It's not hard to figure out. Roy's body is far from the cleric, in the company of only two people who are in way over their heads.

I agree. The party (without Roy) is already split in two.

Heck, in real time it's been over two months since we've seen anything from the other characters. I don't even miss them anymore.

Well, Haley is a fan of extradimensional storage space, so lugging Roy’s rotting carcass should not be a problem provided Roy is worth his weight & mass in gold to her.

To quote G.I. Joe's Stalker:

Well, ain't that a kick in the head.

Very interesting plot twist. I presume that the refugee fleet's busy settling down and hasn't been able to get the body back.
