If I ever play Shadowrun or d20 Modern, I'll yoink this somehow.

Yes. Each day a corpse spends under the protection of gentle repose doesn't count for this purpose, so a corpse with a permanent gentle repose cast on it (whether permanency works for gentle repose is left to DM's fiat) could be revived with raise dead even three millennia later.

Oh, wow. Now there's a cool idea for how a lawful good society could deal with criminals! Kill 'em and cast permanent gentle repose on 'em. Then you just need room to store the body, and if it ever turns out that they were wrongly charged, it's not extraordinarily difficult to correct the mistake.

Could lead to some good plots, too. A particular thief knows where the MacGuffin was buried, but he was executed 40 years ago. Time to go grab his body and bring him back!

Was wondering how Haley and Belkar would get back with the rest by the morning. Seems like they didn't! I'm with Mouseferatu here and expect to get backstory filled in through dialog.

Of course, you do require some kind of spellcaster for this, which is something the Haley+Belkar side of the party split is particularly lacking right now.

Now that would be a hilarious twist. Roy discovers that someone has taken his place in the party, although I would not go with a Paladin. Have Roy's player get tired of playing a LG character, so he plays something darker instead.

Except that Hinjo was right there, ready to be PC-ified. :)

GASP! What if Haley's become a vampire, and Belkar is working as Xykon's enforcer?

Haley has that misunderstood goth side...
Belkar fits with the villains better than the good guys...

Oh noes!!

I recall getting an item in an adventure once that was an amulet of gentle repose. Does no good to put it on a living person, but you can put it on a corpse and keep it "fresh" forever. Don't know if that was something the DM made up or if he got it from somewhere.

So purely from the D&D perspective - if Roy comes back after 3 months, this means all the other characters have gotten levels, but Roy did not!

But wow, good twist. Absolutely not expecting it.
