Oots 501!

Elan was crying out of both eyes. I know a man with one eye, and another who wears a patch because his eye is dead (but still in the socket). Neither is really capable of producing tears. The latter can, but not very many and with great pain.

I suspect that Elan is wearing an eyepatch because of this:

Eye patches may have had a more practical purpose for sailors and pilots. According to the myth, sailors (stereotyped by the eye-patch-wearing pirate) who often went above and below deck, used eye patches to have one eye adjusted for the top deck and the other eye already adjusted for the darkness when suddenly going below deck. The strong sunlight while above deck on an oceangoing vessel could require minutes of adjustment to the dim lighting below deck. With virtually no light sources below deck, sailors would have to rely heavily upon their eyes to adjust. In the critical moments of modifying the rigging, navigating, and especially during battle, those minutes were too precious. A simple switch of the patch from one eye to the other saved time and was more convenient than being temporarily blinded when going between decks. This was deemed plausible on the January 17, 2007 episode of Mythbusters.

Alternatively, it is what I said above: a damaged eye from looking at the sun as part of using a sextant. As far as I am aware, it puts nasty blind spot in the center of the eye, but otherwise leaves the eye functional. I imagine someone could cry out of an eye that was like that.

They are a real progressive society down there in the south.. cause last I checked the males carry on the name.. and die to carry on that name. To give up the noble house so easily... and have it under his wife's name... i cant imagine what his ancestors will say.

And he can still cry out of that eye - so it's still good. I expect he will flip it up to get a better look later... and i did notice the four nations panels - so I do think he picked up another level and an eyepatch for effect is not out of the question for prereq. or perhaps he has some bonuses..

Well, the culture of Azure City is at best loosely based on Japanese culture, so comparing it to anything else is pointless. The only culture it has is what Rich creates for it. As it stands, it is somewhat less based on historical reality than Rokugan (which itself isn't a very sterling example of historical accuracy). If no one on that ship has a problem with it, then there is no reason to think that there should be a problem with it.

Wow, that's fascinating. I'd never thought of that before. (And obviously that episode of one of my favourite shows hasn't hit the UK yet.)
