I KNOW we're dealing with low-level paladins against high-level effects here! And I KNOW it's a story too, and that Rich is not bound 100% by the rules. I'm just annoyed at the rather consistent failures of paladins in the strip, particularly in areas where paladins in general should excel (such as Will saves against compulsion effects). It's not like Rich isn't stacking the deck enough against them already...

I really don't understand people's obsession with Rich being "fair" to a particular character class. It only seems to apply to the paladins. The paladins aren't the heroes of the story, they're background characters. Who cares if they're treated fairly? They exist to make the villains look more evil when they get killed, nothing more.

It's like complaining about how easily Darth Vader kills Rebel Trooper #43 in the opening scene of Star Wars. Who cares? Why get emotionally attached to a minor character?

EDIT: And why does no one complain that Rich is "stacking the deck" against rangers by protraying the only ranger in the strip to be a bloodthirsty dimwit? I mean, I'm annoyed at the consistent failure of rangers in the strip, particularly in areas where rangers should excel (such as Spot and Listen checks, Wild Empathy checks, and Tracking). Oh, wait, that's right--it's a COMEDY.

Because good fiction generally takes place in a world of some internal reality. One of the frustrating things about many movies is where the bad guys can kill the peons so easily and then have so much trouble with the good guys. It's more engaging for many people when it feels more real. Yes, it's comedy, but comedy that holds some plausibility--and OOTS isn't as far out as, say, Spaceballs--still needs to worry about that to some degree.
