Oooh! Haley broke through the fourth wall! Well, as demonstrated by Haley effortlessly turning her opponent into a goth-porcupine while remaining unscathed, there wasn't really any balance between their two classes until her opponent pulled out a non-core spell.

Tsukiko could have used some non-Reflex save spell. The problem wasn't the rogue, but Tsukiko's poor strategy. She could have used Dominate Person (provided she could cast it again), or Blur, or Invisibility in the first round, or something that didn't do direct damage. That's what a mage gets for not casting a defensive spell fast.

Oh, this isn't an example of power creep.

As those have mentioned, save or dies could've been tossed around. As could a maximized Magic Missile (Doesn't even need an attack roll). Or hell, a heightened Hold Person could've done the job.

Hell, she could've touched Hailey with a Poison Spell. Although, with Hailey being a Rogue, being invisible and behind her wouldn't have helped - her Uncanny Dodge, etc.

A summon spell could've also given her some backup, but I think that sorta defeats the purpose of "Mono e Mono".

That spell still requires a touch attack, and rogue's in general have good touch ACs, so she still got lucky on the hit anyway:)
Invisibility -> no Dex or Dodge.

Necroskanko ain't dumb.

Heh. I must have looked at that about 15 seconds before the new strip went up!

re the story - it illustrates one of the problems IMO of rampant new-spell-itis outside the core books... they can dramatically remove the balance between two classes, as per the example with Haley here!

I think it kind of shows how a DM can mess with a metagamer. :P (Lets face it the OOTs crew metagames a lot... :p)

There's evidence that Tsukiko buffed before she teleported in; she told the wights that they had their buff spells on, and why wouldn't she buff herself at the same time? Just because we don't see the effects doesn't mean they aren't there. She could have had Stoneskin cast, explaining a reduction in Haley's sneak attack damage that would allow Tsukiko to survive.
