OOTS #549 is Up

I think the Monster in the Darkness is too much of a simpleton to have an alignment. :]

Still, this was a pretty funny strip.

Yeah, I'd go with CN or N for the monster. A good person would feel obliged to save a child, not just dump one in the trash. Of course, it could be evil and simply doesn't like the taste of children (puberty adds flavor!).

I'd go with neutral (as in Dire-Wolf-that-wants-to-eat-you neutral). Aside from the fact that it's self-aware, it just seems to simple to have an alignment.

Oh, incidentally, when I first read that line (it just feels... weird), it made me think that maybe the monster is a baby itself. That also jives well with my theory on its alignment, since children of a young enough age arguably can't have an alignment. Having an alignment implies an understanding of empathy and consequences which people are not born with.

Yeah, I think it's Neutral in that it's too simple or childlike to have a polarized alignment.

It's not malicious enough to eat a child, but not virtuous enough to want to free it. It doesn't like rules, but it will obey them if pestered too (like staying in the shadows).

In terms of being childlike, that huge earthquake that lead to the capture of O'Chul was caused by the monster stamping the ground like he did when Xykon refused to buy him some toys. Not to mention that it was holding a tea party with Roy's corpse and O'Chul, and talks about secret clubs that girls can't join. It's like a preschooler with the power of a tarrasque.

It's not evil, it's strangely innocent but with incredible power and it's easily manipulated enough that it's being used as a weapon.

Maybe O'Chul can be a good moral compass for it. It's spent most of it's time around Xykon and Redcloak, not exactly good role models, for all we know O'Chul could give it another view of the world.

Oh my dear! I think you might have just solved the mystery of MitD  ! It actually might be a child-tarrasque  . Tarrasque actually has above-animal intelligence http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/tarrasque.htm

Of course there is one bend in this theory:

I think there would be riots if the thing turned out to be even tangentially related to the big T. It's just too damn obvious and hackneyed, even given the monster's small size, and Rich is a master at defying expectations.

Honestly, at this point, I even question whether it's possible for the big reveal to be anything short of disappointing. What could it possibly be that would live up to all the hype and expectations? If the monster could be literally anything at all, and had no restrictions even in the context of what we've seen in the comic (i.e. where it was captured, that it's capable of fitting under an umbrella, etc), is there anything at all which would be a satisfying answer to the mystery?

If there is, I can't think of it.

I was thinking the MitD could be an Athasian Half-Giant :p (alignment-wise).

I clicked on the link and it actually when to the page. Amazing! Normally it lags out because everyone else is trying to look at it too.

That's because you went (a) in the middle of the night, and (b) over half-a-day after the comic was posted.

IME, if a new OotS gets posted in the morning, and I read a thread like this when I get to work (about 9am CT), I'm not able to successfully get the comic to load until late afternoon, at the earliest.
